Accipiter Radar Technologies Inc., a leader in North America for crafting and implementing intelligent radar network platforms, including bird and counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) surveillance solutions for civilian and military airfields, has secured the contract to provide its 3D bird radar system for Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). In collaboration with Blue Quadrant Limited, a specialist in aviation communication, navigation, and surveillance, Accipiter’s installation marks the inaugural bird radar setup in Kenya. It aims to track avian movements within the vicinity of the airport’s approach and landing paths, offering crucial insights for airport personnel to evaluate potential hazards and respond effectively.

“We are excited to be working with our regional partners and Kenya Airports Authority to provide our proven 3D avian radar system in Nairobi” stated Simon Jerome, Accipiter’s Vice President of Sales & Marketing. “Jomo Kenyatta International Airport will be the first airport in the region to embrace this important capability and are setting a high standard for airports in the African Continent”.

JKIA, located in Nairobi, stands as Africa’s leading gateway and a central hub for flights entering and exiting East and Central Africa. Recognized as the Kenya Airports Authority’s (KAA) flagship airport, JKIA accommodates over 40 passenger and 25 cargo airlines, underscoring its pivotal role in the aviation sector. It is instrumental in setting standards for other airports in the region and handles roughly 7 million passengers each year.

“KAA have conducted a detailed and rigorous company, technology and due diligence evaluation” stated Shashi Shirol, CEO, Blue Quadrant Limited. “Accipiter has demonstrated that they can deliver the best in class, 3D avian radar capabilities that will meet and exceed the customer’s expectations. We look forward to working on this project together.”

The deployment of the Accipiter® bird radar system is anticipated to be fully operational by the early summer of 2024.
