In Kozhikode, the Nipah outbreak started just as the tourist season came in. This has cast a dark shadow on the arrival of tourists in Kerala, which the experts earlier anticipated that was this year it would a resounding footfall following the quiet phase caused by flood and the pandemic.

Besides providing direct as well as indirect employment to several people out there, the tourism sector of Kerala assisted the State to earn almost ₹40,000 crore on a yearly basis till the pandemic struck the world.

Experts in Kerala Travel Mart Society said the outbreak of Nipah, even though confined to a small section in Kozhikode, could well impact the arrival of tourists to this southern state unless immediate confidence-building steps are adopted.

By now, many stakeholders of tourism are quite anxious at the flood of cancellations along with tons of enquiries being made by tourists from other Indian states and countries who had scheduled their trips to the State beforehand. A few national conferences are scheduled to take place this month as well which might be cancelled due to health concerns.

The KTM Society has recently urged the government to communicate that the outbreak is a localized and that Kerala as a whole is safe for travel.
