Kerala Tourism’s Onam fest kicks off, to be celebrated for 7 days across state

The week-long Onam celebrations, which are being organized by Kerala Tourism, kicked off on August 27 with a grand state-level inaugural ceremony in the city. This will set the stage for bringing to life the classical, folk, ethnic, and popular art forms before a large audience in multiple venues in the state capital and districts, with the main theme of “Onam the symphony of harmony,” in the capital city and districts throughout the state.


On August 27 at 6 o’clock, Chief Minister Shri Pinarayi Vijayan inaugurated the festivities at Nishagandhi Auditorium. The state-level inaugural event was presided over by Shri P A Mohamed Riyas, Minister for Tourism and Public Works.


The chief guestswere renowned dancer Mallika Sarabhai and actor Fahadh Faasil.


Students from Peringode School in Pattambi performedPanchavadyam prior to the opening ceremony, while artists from Kerala Kalamandalam put on a breathtaking dance performance centered around the festival’s theme. The evening’s highlight was “Chinganilavu,” a mega show hosted by playback singers Biju Narayanan and Rimi Tomy and sponsored by Kairali TV.


On September 2, the event will come to a close with colorful pageantries in the state capital and neighboring cities.At ManaveeyamVeedhi, Governor Shri Arif Mohammed Khan will launch the Onam pageantry.


Greeting visitors before of the festival, Shri Riyas stated that the yearly cultural spectacle is a much-anticipated event in the state and beyond, contributing to the beauty, elegance, inclusion, and egalitarian message of the renowned holiday cherished by all Malayalis worldwide.


The state Tourism Department’s Onam celebrations are a major event in the state’s tourism calendar, attracting a large number of tourists to Kerala during the season to enjoy the state’s diverse and vibrant cultural expressions and savour a variety of traditional meals topped with the multi-dish’sadya’ served on plantain leaf, according to the Minister.


Kanakakunnu, Central Stadium, Thycaud Police Ground, Poojappura Ground, Shankumugham, Bharat Bhavan, Gandhi Park, Ayyankali Hall, VyloppillySamskrithi Bhavan, and Museum Compound will be among the 31 locations in the state capital.


Mallika Sarabhai’s dance performance, fusion orchestra led by percussionist MattanurSankarankutty Marar and Musician Prakash Ulliyeri, Shahabaz Aman’s ghazal night, Harisankar’s musical band, and a mega show led by Tini Tom and PrajodKalabhavan will all take place at Nishagandhi.


Naresh Iyer, Masala Coffee, Sithara, Sooraj Santhosh & Lakshmi Jayan, Gouri Lakshmi, and Job Kurien will perform at Central Stadium. Jassie Gift’s band will perform at Thycaud Police Ground. The Poojappura Ground will also have a ganamela led by playback singers Unni Menon, Afsal, Sudheep Kumar, Aparna Rajeev, and Nithya Mammen. Ganamela will be performed at Greenfield Stadium by Ranjini Jose, Najeem Arshad, Panthalam Balan, Nishad, and Pushpavathi. Ganamela will also be available in the Public Office premises.


Professional and amateur drama will be performed at Ayyankali Hall and Museum Compound, respectively. The Museum Compound will host a Kalaripayattu (Martial Arts) competition. The major dance programs will be held at VyloppillySamskrithi Bhavan and Bharat Bhavan.


‘Kathaprasangam’ will be performed in Gandhi Park, while folk arts will be performed at Thiruvarangu and Sopanam.


In Kanakakunnu gate, musical and percussion instruments will be played, and Kathakali, Koothu, Koodiyattam, and Aksharslokam will be performed in KanakakunnuAkathalam. Shankumugham will have a variety of performances by women and children.


Veli Tourist Village, Kerala Arts and Craft Village at Vellar, Peroorkada Bapuji Library, Sreevaraham, Akkulam, Mudavoorpara Boat Club, Sree Narayana Gurukulam at Chempazhanthi, Vellayani, Attingal Municipal Ground, Nedumangadu, and Neyyattinkara have all organized events.


The city will be illuminated from Kowdiar to Manacaud, as it is every year, and it will also be extended to the Sasthamangalamneighborhood. Aside from numerous programs, trade and culinary festivals will be hosted across the city. Swings will be put across the city to continue the tradition.


Meanwhile, the State Tourism Department and District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) will organize Onam festivities in other districts in collaboration.
