Kern County is gearing up for a significant meteorological event, with back-to-back storms forecast to hit the region. Starting Wednesday evening and stretching into the weekend, these weather systems are expected to bring substantial snow and rainfall, potentially impacting local tourism and travel plans.

The National Weather Service in Hanford has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the Sierra Nevada, which will affect mountain areas including Kernville and northern Kern County. With predictions of 1 to 2 feet of snow for areas between 5,000 and 6,000 feet, the scenic landscape could transform into a winter wonderland, possibly attracting snow enthusiasts but also challenging travel.

This shift in weather is attributed to an atmospheric river set to drench California, affecting Kern County with lower snow levels and prompting officials to issue warnings. The first wave of the storm is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall, starting Wednesday night into Thursday morning, and a Flood Watch has been issued for the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, including Kernville and Lake Isabella.

As Kern County anticipates anywhere from a half inch to .75 inches of rain on Thursday and Friday, with mountain areas expecting more, the weather might influence travel plans for tourists. The forecast suggests Tehachapi could receive up to an inch of snow, while Frazier Park may see up to 16 inches through Monday, presenting a potential draw for winter sports enthusiasts but also a caution for travelers.

Local and state officials are urging residents and motorists to exercise caution and avoid driving through flooded roads. Caltrans warns against ignoring barriers or warning signs on roads. With the possibility of difficult travel conditions and road closures due to flooding, tourists planning to visit Kern County during this period should be prepared for disruptions and altered plans.

These impending storms in Kern County, while potentially boosting winter tourism, also serve as a reminder of the importance of safety and preparedness during extreme weather conditions.
