The first scientific underwater excavations in the Black Sea’s Kerpe Bay have not only unearthed a rich collection of historical artifacts but are also set to significantly benefit the travel and tourism sector. These findings, spanning from the 4th century B.C. to the 12th century A.D., mark a significant milestone in unveiling the hidden cultural treasures of a region historically known as “Kalpe.” It was disclosed that these excavations have paved the way for the establishment of an underwater archaeology park, a project anticipated to be a major draw for diving tourism upon its completion this year.

Situated in the Kandıra district of Kocaeli, opening to the Black Sea, Kerpe has been recognized for its fertile climate since the Hellenistic period. Its historical role as a commercial center through various eras, including the Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman periods, has been highlighted. The ongoing underwater excavations, initiated in 2020 by the Kocaeli Museum Directorate, have generated considerable interest as Türkiye’s inaugural scientific underwater exploration in the Black Sea, uncovering significant artifacts and ruins beneath the waters of Kerpe Bay.

This initiative is not only a significant stride in archaeological exploration but also a visionary step towards enhancing the region’s tourism potential. The discovery of artifacts, including ancient port breakwater fragments and amphorae remains, underscores Kerpe’s rich historical narrative and commercial significance through the ages.

The Kocaeli Museum Director, Serkan Gedük, emphasized the importance of these findings, stating that the artifacts have been showcased in an exhibition dedicated to celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye. This exhibition, alongside the proposed Kerpe Underwater Archaeopark Project, aims to spotlight the region’s underwater heritage, offering visitors and diving enthusiasts a unique glimpse into history.

Supported by the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage and Museums and the Eastern Marmara Development Agency, the “Kerpe Underwater Archaeopark Project” is a pioneering endeavor set to be Türkiye’s first such underwater exhibition of real artifacts. This project, expected to conclude in 2024, promises to open up new avenues for diving tourism, inviting explorers to dive into the depths of history in Kerpe Bay.
