Malta’s Civil Aviation Directorate has granted KM Malta Airlines both its Air Operator Certificate (AOC) and Operator’s Licence (OL). In an official statement, the newly established airline announced the commencement of ticket sales for its inaugural network on December 4. As previously indicated by ch-aviation, the carrier is scheduled to initiate flight operations on March 31, 2024.

The airline anticipates servicing 17 destinations with a fleet consisting of eight A320-200neo aircraft, a departure from its predecessor, Air Malta (KM, Malta International), which currently operates a combination of six A320neo and A320-200s, as indicated by ch-aviation fleets advanced data.

In an October presentation by Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela and Finance Minister Clyde Caruana, published by the Times of Malta, the new airline outlined plans to fly to Amsterdam Schiphol, Berlin Brandenburg International, Brussels National, Catania, Düsseldorf, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, Lyon St. Exupéry, Madrid Barajas, Milan Linate, Munich, Paris CDG, Paris Orly, Prague Václav Havel, Rome Fiumicino, Vienna, and Zurich. The business plan also includes Copenhagen Kastrup in the third year.

Based on ch-aviation schedules data, Milan Malpensa is the sole destination served by Air Malta in its current winter schedule that will not be covered by its successor. Additionally, during the summer 2023 season, Air Malta operated flights to Geneva, Rotterdam, and Vienna.

Despite ch-aviation’s request for clarification on the source of the two additional A320neo aircraft for KM Malta Airlines’ fleet, which will not be procured from Air Malta, the airline has not provided a response.
