In the wake of a post-COVID surge in travel, Kyoto is exploring the introduction of express buses as a solution to alleviate the pressure on its public transport system and reduce the impact on local residents. This initiative aims to provide a direct route for tourists from Kyoto Station to key attractions such as Kiyomizu temple and the Gion geisha district, enhancing travel efficiency while mitigating congestion on regular city buses.

The city’s government has announced plans to launch this “sightseeing express bus” service by June, offering a more streamlined travel option for visitors to the ancient capital. With fewer stops and a direct path to major tourism sites, these express buses are expected to offer a significant improvement in the travel experience for the increasing number of tourists drawn to Kyoto’s rich cultural heritage.

The proposed fare structure for the express buses is set at ¥500 for adults and ¥250 for children, positioning it as a premium option compared to standard city bus tickets.

The resurgence of tourism in Japan, particularly in Kyoto, has highlighted the challenges of “overtourism” and its effects on local communities. With its historical significance and iconic landmarks, Kyoto has become a focal point for domestic and international visitors, leading to overcrowded public transport and strained resources.

The introduction of the sightseeing express bus, along with adjustments to the single-day pass to include express bus access, represents the city’s proactive approach to managing tourist influx and preserving the quality of life for its residents. This strategy is part of a broader effort to find a sustainable balance between supporting tourism and ensuring the wellbeing of the Kyoto community.
