LaGuardia Airport, once considered among the least favorable airports in the United States, has dramatically reversed its standing, securing the title of the best airport within its category in North America according to a recent passenger survey. This accolade, the Airport Service Quality (ASQ) award by Airports Council International, underscores LaGuardia’s significant improvements, which have enhanced the travel experience for millions. This transformation not only reflects the airport’s enhanced operational efficiency but also its potential to significantly impact the travel and tourism industry in New York.

The airport’s metamorphosis is the result of an ambitious multibillion-dollar redevelopment project in Queens, which has elevated LaGuardia from its previously unfavorable position to an exemplar of airport quality within just five years. Rick Cotton, the executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, remarked indirectly on the skepticism that initially surrounded the $8 billion overhaul. Yet, the reception of the ASQ award serves as a tangible affirmation of their vision to construct an airport that meets the high expectations of the region. This achievement highlights how strategic investments in infrastructure can transform travel hubs into gateways that significantly enhance the travel experience for tourists and business travelers alike.

Suzette Noble, CEO of LaGuardia Gateway Partners, attributed the receipt of the ASQ award to the relentless effort and dedication of both the construction teams and the daily service staff. In 2023, with the completion of new terminals and roadways, LaGuardia saw all its passenger facilities fully operational for the first time. This development led to a notable increase in passenger satisfaction, with the airport scoring an impressive 4.24 out of 5. The significant improvements in the airport’s ambiance and cleanliness played a crucial role in this leap in passenger satisfaction, which saw increases of 21% and 15%, respectively. Enhancements in security screening, dining options, and the comfort of gate areas were also key contributors, as indicated by the Port Authority.

The ASQ survey, completed by over 4,200 travelers at LaGuardia throughout 2023, reflects the direct impact of the airport’s enhancements on its users. Port Authority Chairman Kevin O’Toole emphasized the importance of passenger judgment in evaluating the success of the new facilities. The award not only validates the efforts made to improve LaGuardia but also signals its contribution to uplifting the travel and tourism sector by providing a welcoming and efficient entry point for visitors to New York.
