Laos: Kham district tourism starts to flourish

Kham district of Xieng Khuang province in Laos is basking in tourism glory. The tourism sector in the district is experiencing a rebound after the Covid-19 pandemic.


Since the official reopening of Laos in May, the tourism sector in Kham has started to revive. The region has been witnessing a growing number of tourists, especially during the 11th National Games that is currently being hosted by Xieng Khuang province, Vientiane Times reported.


Before the Covid-19 outbreak, more than 30,000 tourists visited various places in the district every year. This number came down to nearly zero during the lockdown as all tourist attractions were closed.


The Deputy Head of the Information, Culture and Tourism Office of Kham, Khambay Sengchanpheng, was quoted by Vientiane Times as saying, “The number of tourists has increased a lot and we expect a further increase by the end of December.”


Kham has natural and historic sites such as the Pui cave, Hot Spring Number 1 in Hom village, which is the largest hot spring in the area, Hot Spring Number 2 in Xang village, and Hot Spring Number 3 in Phumeuang village.


The district also boasts of a UNESCO World Heritage Site named the Plain of Jars. There is a site with 23 prehistoric stone jars site at Namhom village and another site with 42 stone jars at Phuxang in Xang village. These sites are located at an altitude of more than 1,200m above sea level.


In order to revive and promote the tourism sector, Khambay encouraged people to visit the different tourist spots in Kham district and other cities of Xieng Khuang province.
