Football enthusiasts who want to support the Chiefs in Las Vegas should know a few travel tips for a smooth trip there and back, especially if they’re bringing Super Bowl memorabilia.

Officials from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) anticipate more people flying from Kansas City International Airport (MCI) this week because of the Super Bowl LVIII. Normally, about 14,000 passengers fly out each day, but this week, they’re expecting 16,000 to 17,000 passengers daily as the game approaches.

TSA advises getting to the airport at least two hours early and being prepared for security checks.

Angela Brooks, the TSA’s top security officer in Missouri, emphasizes the importance of planning ahead during busy travel times. Arriving early and knowing what items are allowed in carry-on and checked luggage can make the security process quicker and smoother.

For those who can’t miss their Kansas City barbecue, solid foods are okay to bring along. But if the food or drink can spill, spray, spread, pump, or pour, it needs to go in checked luggage. This includes barbecue sauces and drinks for tailgating.

Remember the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule for liquids in carry-on bags: liquids must be 3.4 ounces or less, in a quart-sized bag, and limited to one bag per passenger. Small amounts of paint for face decoration are fine in carry-ons, but larger quantities should go in checked luggage.

When heading home, keep game programs in carry-on luggage, but other souvenirs like hats, helmets, and T-shirts can go in either carry-on or checked bags. Empty metal beer cans with the Super Bowl logo are allowed in both, but cans with beer inside must be in checked luggage.

If you’re unsure where to pack an item, the MyTSA app can help. It has a feature that tells you if an item is allowed on flights. You can also ask questions through X or Facebook Messenger at @AskTSA, or text “Travel” to AskTSA (275-872).

TSA also suggests checking their website for useful travel tips and information on what to expect during your flight preparations.
