Alaska Airlines is making bold moves in its global growth strategy as Neil Thwaites steps into his new role as Vice President of Global Sales & California Commercial Performance. This promotion, effective December 13, 2025, comes as the airline looks to enhance its global footprint and accelerate sales across international markets.

A Strategic Move for Global Expansion

In his new role, Thwaites will lead all sales activities for both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines. The position is central to Alaska’s expanding international network, and Thwaites is poised to play a key role in fostering indirect revenue and growth across domestic and international routes. With Alaska Airlines now offering flights to destinations across Europe, Asia, and Latin America, Thwaites will be instrumental in securing new business partnerships and expanding Alaska’s reach to new global audiences.

The airline’s growth trajectory includes new intercontinental flights from Seattle, such as services to London Heathrow, Rome, Reykjavik, and more. These are set to take off in 2026, marking the airline’s first foray into European markets.

Thwaites’ Journey: From Regional VP to Global Leader

Thwaites, who joined Alaska Airlines in 2022 as Regional Vice President of California, has a strong background in the airline industry. Before his tenure at Alaska, Thwaites worked with British Airways, gaining experience in key positions in London, New York, and Los Angeles. He most recently served as Vice President of Sales for the Western USA, overseeing market development for both British Airways and Iberia.

In his first few years with Alaska Airlines, Thwaites made significant strides in strengthening Alaska’s position in California, a key market for the airline. His efforts in California commercial planning helped refine Alaska’s focus and increase its market presence in critical communities across the state.

Thwaites will continue to be based in Burlingame, California, but now with broader responsibilities, including leading the global sales strategy for both airlines. He will oversee the expansion of Atmos for Business, a new program aimed at small- and medium-sized businesses, further diversifying the airlines’ customer base.

Alaska Airlines: Connecting More Guests to the World

Alaska Airlines, in partnership with Hawaiian Airlines, has committed to expanding its global routes as part of its mission to connect guests to the world. Currently, Alaska operates flights to over 140 destinations, including 29 international markets across North America, Latin America, and Asia. With the upcoming addition of flights to Europe, this global network will grow exponentially.

Starting in 2026, passengers can book nonstop flights from Seattle to London, Rome, and Reykjavik, marking the airline’s entry into the European market. Alaska Airlines’ future plans also include at least 12 intercontinental destinations by 2030, facilitated by the arrival of 17 Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. This new fleet will provide guests with enhanced comfort and amenities on long-haul international flights, designed to elevate the global travel experience.

New Opportunities in Global Sales

Thwaites’ role extends beyond market expansion. He will lead the execution of all global sales activities, working to grow indirect revenue through partnerships with global brands and expanding the scope of Atmos Rewards, which has been ranked as the #1 airline loyalty program for the past 11 years. This program allows members to earn points for travel to over 1,000 destinations worldwide, including the newest international routes. The recent growth of Atmos Titanium status promises guests more exclusive travel benefits, including complimentary lie-flat upgrades on international flights.

Thwaites’ leadership will also be crucial in expanding the global loyalty program to meet the demands of travelers seeking more flexibility and rewards. His focus will ensure Alaska Airlines stays competitive in an increasingly globalized travel market, where travelers are seeking more choices and rewards as they explore new destinations.

A Bright Future for Global Travel and Connectivity

As the airline industry adjusts to an increasingly competitive global landscape, Alaska Airlines’ expansion strategy under Thwaites promises to position the company as a leader in global connectivity. The new focus on expanding international routes and enhancing the guest experience will make Alaska a key player in the market. With the addition of new aircraft like the Boeing 787, and cutting-edge services like ultra-fast Wi-Fi powered by Starlink, Alaska Airlines aims to deliver an unparalleled global travel experience to its passengers.

Thwaites’ Vision for a Unified Global Sales Team

In addition to overseeing the airline’s sales strategy, Thwaites will continue Alaska Airlines’ tradition of providing exceptional service while expanding its network. His efforts will ensure that both Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines work together seamlessly to enhance the customer experience for travelers across North America and beyond. His promotion marks a turning point in the airline’s journey, with global expansion and customer-focused initiatives set to drive Alaska’s growth over the next decade.

With the airline industry poised for continued transformation, Thwaites’ leadership will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping Alaska Airlines’ future, helping it navigate new challenges and seize new opportunities in the global market.
