LNER is welcoming new research that reveals travelling by train is not just greener, but also quicker and cheaper than taking the plane.

The research, by industry body the Rail Delivery Group, takes in to account that train services run from city centre to city centre while flying involves the cost and time of getting to an airport, which are often located well outside the city centre.

The report also calculates the true cost of flying with luggage, which is included in the ticket price when travelling on LNER but often costs extra to take on a plane.

The RDG research shows that travelling from London to Edinburgh on an LNER service is 17 times better for the environment than flying, is quicker by twenty minutes city centre to city centre and typically costs less than a third of the price, once transfers and luggage costs are taken into account.

Taking the train between London to Newcastle is 12 times better for the environment, is more than 2 hours quicker, and is typically less than a third of the total price of flying and traveling from city centre to city centre.

David Flesher, Commercial Director at LNER said: “Time and again people claim that it’s cheaper and quicker to fly between London and Edinburgh or London and Newcastle.

However, when you properly compare the cost and the time then rail works out considerably quicker and cheaper.”

“It’s not just speed and value for money of course. The value to the planet of taking the train is huge, with travelling by rail up to 17 times greener than flying domestically.

This research is clear that whichever way you look at it, travelling by train is simply better. Better for your wallet, a better use of your time and better for the environment.”
