During National Careers Week, London Gatwick hosted a series of events aimed at providing local students with the necessary guidance and skills for their future job prospects. This initiative is part of a broader effort to support and engage students at a crucial juncture in their educational journey, especially those on the cusp of leaving school.

As a principal employer in the vicinity, London Gatwick employs over 25,000 individuals who work collaboratively across various sectors of the airport to ensure passengers have a seamless experience. From March 4th to 9th, a range of activities were organized to highlight the diverse career opportunities available at Gatwick, drawing the participation of 385 students from schools in Crawley, Worthing, Burgess Hill, and Chessington. These activities were centered around STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), showcasing the wide array of paths students can explore.

The week’s events kicked off with a virtual discovery workshop on engineering, facilitated by a technician and an apprentice through the Speakers for Schools program. This session reached 200 students from local educational institutions.

Additionally, as part of the Love Local Jobs Foundation’s Dare to Dream mentoring scheme, Gatwick volunteers conducted a mentoring session at Thomas Bennett school. The session, which engaged 220 Year 9 students and provided one-on-one mentoring for 15 students, covered important topics such as self-awareness, mindset, gratitude, resilience, teamwork, and employability. This program is designed to equip young individuals with critical life skills, setting them up for success in their future careers.

Moreover, Adrian Geaves, a senior project manager at London Gatwick, shared his insights on sustainability and construction during an EVERFI ‘Ask a Pro’ virtual panel, further enriching the educational experience for students during National Careers Week.

Melanie Wrightson, Stakeholder Engagement Manager, London Gatwick said: “At London Gatwick, we are passionate about nurturing talent and encouraging young people to consider a career in the aviation sector.

“A diverse and skilled pipeline of local talent is critical to a healthy labour market and London Gatwick’s future growth. It has been brilliant to welcome so many students to the airport this week and showcase the breadth of careers Gatwick can offer.

“Our vision is to be the airport for everyone, whatever your journey and it is key we invest in the workforce for the future as we continue to grow.”

London Gatwick is committed to expanding its educational support, aiming to engage 1 million students by 2030 through a variety of educational initiatives.

The recent inauguration of the airport’s dedicated STEM centre is crucial for achieving this goal. This custom-built facility provides a dynamic educational environment for students aged 4-18, allowing them to immerse themselves in STEM subjects and discover the range of career paths the airport offers.

As part of its strategic vision for growth, London Gatwick has submitted a planning application to routinely use its Northern Runway. Currently under review by the Planning Inspectorate, this environmentally conscious proposal aims to enhance operational efficiency, minimize delays, and significantly contribute to both the local and national economies by bolstering trade, tourism, and employment opportunities.
