A recent report has identified London, Prague, and Sofia as the leading European capitals for weekend getaways this year. London claims the title for the best-rated nightlife, boasting a remarkable 854 highly rated establishments. Additionally, it ranks as the fifth most expensive European capital for accommodation, with an average cost of €116.9 per person per night.

Skopje (North Macedonia), Tirana (Albania), and Sofia (Bulgaria) are also highlighted among the top ten European capitals for city escapes, offering the most affordable accommodation. A study conducted by Slot.Day analyzed nightlife quality and accommodation costs in European capitals, focusing on highly rated establishments on TripAdvisor and considering the expense for two people sharing a room.

The top 10 European capitals for weekend getaways, based on nightlife quality and accommodation costs, are as follows:

  1. London – 854 nightlife places, €116.9 per person
  2. Prague – 418 nightlife places, €58.9 per person
  3. Sofia – 112 nightlife places, €41.9 per person
  4. Skopje – 20 nightlife places, €38.1 per person
  5. Tirana – 61 nightlife places, €40.6 per person
  6. Bucharest – 109 nightlife places, €45.0 per person
  7. Belgrade – 133 nightlife places, €46.8 per person
  8. Warsaw – 99 nightlife places, €45.6 per person
  9. Berlin – 375 nightlife places, €76.3 per person
  10. Sarajevo – 29 nightlife places, €42.5 per person

While London stands out for its diverse offerings, Prague, renowned for its award-winning beer, secures the second position at half the cost of London for hotel stays. Sofia, a major tourist attraction in Bulgaria, rounds off the top three with affordable accommodation and a variety of nightlife options.

For those seeking budget-friendly stays, Skopje tops the list at €38.1 per person, followed closely by Tirana and Sofia at €40.6 and €41.9 per person, respectively.

In contrast, Bern (Switzerland), Reykjavik (Iceland), and Valletta (Malta) are deemed less preferable for short holidays due to their higher accommodation costs and fewer highly rated nightlife establishments.

Michael Slot, the main author and journalist of Slot.Day, expressed surprise at the findings, highlighting lesser-known destinations like Skopje, Tirana, and Sarajevo as offering a balance of high-quality nightlife and affordable accommodation. He also suggested exploring other hidden gems like Vilnius, Riga, and Chisinau for a culturally enriching and budget-friendly weekend getaway in 2024.
