London Luton Airport (LLA) recently welcomed Rob Bishton, Chief Executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), along with his team, for an exclusive terminal walkthrough highlighting LLA’s strides in accessibility and inclusive travel services.

As the airport reports a remarkable 30 percent year-on-year increase in assisted travel passenger numbers, the visit served as a timely opportunity to showcase LLA’s enhanced initiatives for travelers with reduced mobility and special requirements.

A key focus of the tour was LLA’s newly constructed Assisted Travel lounge, purpose-built to better serve passengers who require additional support. Scheduled to open later in 2025, this innovative facility features a calming sensory room, adult changing spaces, wheelchair charging ports, adjustable ambient lighting, real-time flight information displays, and versatile seating arrangements — all designed to deliver a seamless and dignified travel experience.

Alberto Martin, Chief Executive Officer at London Luton Airport, commented: “London Luton Airport is committed to maintaining an accessible and inclusive environment for all. Initiatives such as our Accessibility Familiarisation Days, along with our regular Accessibility Forum, provide valuable opportunities for our teams to exchange ideas and feedback with passengers with a wide range of assisted travel requirements – all of which supports our commitment to delivering a consistently simple and friendly passenger experience.

“We were delighted to welcome the CAA to the airport and to have the opportunity to showcase LLA’s soon-to-open Assisted Travel Lounge. The lounge is a hugely important investment for the airport and we were thrilled to receive such positive feedback on the enhanced facilities that our assisted travel passengers will benefit from.”

During the visit, the CAA team also participated in one of LLA’s Accessibility Familiarisation Days — an initiative that allows passengers with accessibility needs to explore the airport, test support services, and gain confidence navigating the travel process. The event offered regulators the chance to observe passengers’ real-time experiences and engage directly with attendees about their journeys and feedback.

Rob Bishton, Chief Executive of the UK Civil Aviation Authority, commented: “We believe that everyone should have fair access to air travel and work with industry to drive improvements. London Luton Airport is setting a positive example of how the aviation sector is stepping up to support disabled passengers and give more people the opportunity to take to the skies. LLA’s assisted travel airport lounge is fantastic and a prime example of how the whole sector can better service its customers.”

London Luton Airport’s leadership emphasized that these efforts reflect a long-term commitment to creating a welcoming, people-first environment. “It’s not just about meeting standards — it’s about exceeding them to ensure everyone can travel with dignity, confidence, and ease,” said a spokesperson for LLA.

The CAA team praised the airport’s investment in accessible infrastructure and staff training, noting LLA as a leading example of how UK airports can elevate support for all travelers.

Captain David Morgan, Chief Operating Officer at easyJet, said: “easyJet is committed to making travel accessible for everyone. Our goal is to ensure that every passenger feels supported, valued, and confident when they choose to fly with us. Working with London Luton to support their Accessibility Day is just one of the ways we are continuously working to enhance our customer’s experience, as well as through comprehensive training and collaborating with accessibility experts through our Assisted Travel Advisory Board, to ensure we are inclusive to all.”
