London’s Trocadero building, owned by property tycoon Asif Aziz, has been granted permission to transform a section of the iconic landmark into a mosque and Islamic center. Aziz, who purchased the building for over £220 million in 2005, initially planned to convert it into a 1,000-capacity mosque but had to abandon the project in 2020 due to opposition from far-right groups and some residents.

However, in May 2023, Aziz obtained approval to establish a 390-capacity mosque, to be named “Piccadilly Prayer Space.” The inauguration of the mosque is expected to take place within a few months. The primary aim of the mosque, according to Aziz’s foundation, is to cater to tourists and Muslims employed in the vicinity.

The decision to allow the mosque’s construction comes at a time when the United Kingdom has witnessed a surge in anti-Muslim hate crimes. In 2022 alone, there were 3,459 recorded religious hate crimes specifically targeting Muslims, representing a 42% increase compared to the previous year.

The transformation of part of the Trocadero building into a mosque and Islamic center not only provides a space for worship but also signifies a commitment to promoting religious inclusivity and tolerance in the face of rising Islamophobia. It is a significant step towards providing a safe and accessible environment for Muslims, both locals and visitors, to practice their faith and engage with the community.

Asif Aziz’s endeavor to establish the Piccadilly Prayer Space demonstrates his dedication to overcoming obstacles and ensuring that the mosque becomes a reality. By offering a place of worship within a prominent London landmark, the project aims to foster understanding, respect, and dialogue among different cultures and faiths.

The mosque’s presence in the Trocadero building is expected to contribute to the diverse religious landscape of London, showcasing the city’s commitment to embracing and celebrating its multicultural fabric.
