Once again, in the 2023 global climate ranking conducted by the non-profit organization CDP (formerly Carbon Disclosure Project), the Lufthansa Group has secured top accolades for its CO2 reduction strategy and its effective implementation. With a score of “A-” placing it in the highest ranking band for the second consecutive year on the scale from “A” (best result) to “D-“, the company reaffirms its leading role in promoting sustainable aviation worldwide. The top rating, awarded across various assessment categories including Scope 1 & 2 emissions (direct and indirect from purchased energy), Scope 3 emissions (indirect within the supply chain), emission reduction measures, low-emission products, and disclosure of risks and opportunities, underscores the Lufthansa Group’s commitment to transparency and environmental stewardship.

CDP’s climate ranking is widely recognized as the global benchmark for sustainability reporting. Since 2006, the Lufthansa Group has been actively participating in CDP reporting, ensuring continuous and transparent communication with relevant stakeholders regarding its sustainability strategies and CO2 reduction efforts. With over 23,000 companies participating in CDP’s standardized information collection process annually, representing a significant portion of global market capitalization, the platform serves as a vital resource for evaluating corporate sustainability performance.

Renowned for its environmental reporting standards, CDP is also affiliated with the independent Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), and its data collection is leveraged extensively by leading rating agencies for various assessments. The Lufthansa Group meticulously analyzes its performance in ratings and sustainability indices, aiming to continually enhance its environmental performance.

Committed to ambitious sustainability objectives, the Lufthansa Group is steadfast in its pursuit of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. With an interim goal of halving net CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2019, validated by SBTi in August 2022, the company stands as a pioneer in Europe with science-based CO2 reduction targets aligned with the Paris Climate Agreement. Prioritizing fleet modernization, Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) utilization, operational efficiency enhancements, and sustainable travel options for both private and corporate customers, the Lufthansa Group actively contributes to global climate mitigation efforts while supporting climate and weather research initiatives.
