Lufthansa, Airbus,

The Supervisory Board of the Lufthansa Group has made a decisive move by placing a definitive order for an additional 40 A220-300 aircraft to bolster its short and medium-haul fleet. This strategic decision reaffirms the long-standing partnership between Lufthansa and Airbus. The A220 has been an integral part of the Group’s operations since 2016, when SWISS introduced the first aircraft into its scheduled service.

Carsten Spohr, the Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG, expressed the significance of this order, stating, “With this acquisition of 40 more Airbus A220s, we are extending our exceptional collaboration with Airbus. Just a few months ago, we celebrated the delivery of our 600th Airbus aircraft, solidifying our position as the largest airline customer. We eagerly anticipate welcoming the 700th Airbus into our fleet. These modern, cost-effective, and fuel-efficient aircraft are eagerly awaited by our passengers.”

Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of Airbus International, shared his enthusiasm, saying, “The Lufthansa Group was an early adopter of the A220 and has seamlessly integrated these aircraft into its SWISS route network. We are thrilled to receive this vote of confidence from our esteemed long-term partner and customer. The A220, designed specifically for the 100-150 seat market as a clean-sheet design aircraft, offers unmatched efficiency. It aligns perfectly with Lufthansa Group’s ambitious airline development and sustainability goals.”

Lufthansa’s latest order underscores its enduring relationship with Airbus, which dates back to the A300 in the 1970s. Over the years, Lufthansa Group has operated the full spectrum of Airbus product offerings, spanning from the A220 and A320-Family to A330/A340, A350, and the A380.

The A220-300, the latest addition to the A220 Family, represents a state-of-the-art aircraft capable of accommodating between 120 to 150 passengers on flights covering up to 3,400 nautical miles (6,300 km). Notably, this aircraft boasts a remarkable 25% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions per seat compared to its predecessors. It also features the most spacious cabin, seats, and windows in its class, ensuring an unparalleled level of passenger comfort.

Furthermore, in line with Airbus’s commitment to sustainability, the A220 can already operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Airbus has ambitious plans for the future, aiming to make all its commercial, military aircraft, and helicopters capable of running on up to 100% SAF by 2030.

As of the end of November, Airbus has secured a total of 849 orders from 31 different customers for the A220, with 303 aircraft already delivered. The A220 has proven its worth in the aviation industry, serving successfully with 18 airlines worldwide on over 1,350 routes.
