The Lufthansa Group is expanding its Green Fares to include long-haul flights, initiating a trial on 12 selected routes starting November 30. These routes connect Lufthansa Group hubs with diverse global destinations, including two routes from North America, such as Frankfurt – Bengaluru, Brussels – Kinshasa, or Zurich – Los Angeles. Green Fares will automatically be presented to customers booking flights with Lufthansa Group airlines, facilitating sustainable travel for a broad range of travelers, from London to Hong Kong or Paris to Bangkok, via the airlines’ hubs.

In response to the growing demand for environmentally conscious travel, Christina Foerster, Member of the Lufthansa Group Executive Board, expressed that the Green Fares test on long-haul flights will provide valuable insights for enhancing their sustainable travel portfolio.

Harry Hohmeister, Member of the Lufthansa Group Executive Board, responsible for Global Markets & Network, highlighted the Group’s commitment to innovative, easily accessible, and individual offerings for sustainable flying. The introduction of Green Fares on selected long-haul flights across all hub airlines underscores the strength of the multi-hub and multi-brand strategy.

The Green Fares initiative, initially introduced for European and North African routes in February, has gained traction, with over half a million passengers opting for these flights since its launch. The Green Fares package includes the offsetting of individual flight-related CO2 emissions through Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and contributions to high-quality climate protection projects.

To further develop its CO2 compensation portfolio, the Lufthansa Group has expanded its efforts, incorporating 15 projects, including technology-based initiatives for long-term CO2 binding. These projects, certified by organizations such as myclimate, Climate Austria, SQUAKE, and ClimatePartner, adhere to the highest standards.

The Green Fares long-haul option will be available on 12 test routes served by Lufthansa Group airlines, including Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, and SWISS. These routes span major connections such as Zurich – Los Angeles, Frankfurt – Miami, and Singapore – London.

Emphasizing its commitment to sustainability, the Lufthansa Group aims to achieve a neutral CO2 balance by 2050 and plans to halve its net CO2 emissions by 2030 compared to 2019. This goal was validated by the Science Based Targets initiative, positioning the Lufthansa Group as a pioneering force in climate-conscious air travel in Europe.
