The Frankfurt hub of Lufthansa Airlines has achieved successful validation for the first time in compliance with the rigorous European EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) regulation. This accomplishment underscores Lufthansa Airlines’ commitment to corporate environmental responsibility at its Frankfurt location.

The auditor specifically highlighted the seamless integration of the Frankfurt site into the existing environmental management system at the Munich hub. The dedication of employees and environmental coordinators was also commended.

Jens Ritter, CEO of Lufthansa Airlines, expressed satisfaction with this significant milestone, stating, “We are very pleased about this important step that we were able to achieve with the successful implementation. A professionally implemented and structured environmental management system leads to systematic and sustainable improvements. Our employees are also highly committed to our environmental goals.”

EMAS is an environmental management and auditing system developed by the European Union, which companies can voluntarily adopt. The company’s environmental management system undergoes a thorough review by external auditors during this process.

Lufthansa Airlines had previously introduced a certified environmental management system at its Munich location in 2018. In May 2023, the airline underwent an audit and validation according to EMAS, together with Lufthansa CityLine. With the addition of the Frankfurt site, Lufthansa Airlines is issuing a joint environmental statement for both sites and Lufthansa CityLine.

Lufthansa CityLine, a pioneer in adopting an environmental concept 23 years ago, and Air Dolomiti, an Italian airline belonging to Lufthansa Airlines, are also EMAS-validated.

After successfully implementing the environmental management system at the Frankfurt site, Lufthansa Airlines plans to undergo a joint validation process for the Munich and Frankfurt hub sites, including Lufthansa CityLine, in 2024. This initiative aims to further enhance the efficiency of the environmental management system.

Aligned with its guiding principle “We take off to take care,” Lufthansa Airlines consistently initiates projects and measures to reduce the environmental impact of flying and optimize resource use. The company focuses on accelerated fleet modernization, continuous flight operations optimization, sustainable aviation fuels, and offers for travelers and corporate customers to promote more sustainable air travel. Additionally, Lufthansa Airlines actively supports global climate and weather research initiatives.
