The long-awaited first journey by Britannic Explorer, England and Wales’ first luxury sleeper train, has been delayed. Initially set to begin its first tourist trip on Friday, the tour was rescheduled to a later date in the month to allow last-minute adjustments in its operations. Instead, the train will embark on its first journey on 21 July.
Postpone and Operational Adjustments

The delay was to enable the luxury sleeper train to reach high standards of operation necessary for its first formal journey. Its owner, luxury hotels and tour operator Belmond, which runs the luxury train services, actually admitted that there was a delay but did not provide specific information on the nature of the operational hitches. Reports claimed that the Britannic Explorer was supposed to depart from London Victoria to Penzance, but it was routed for repair around Southampton.
As well as its postponed maiden voyage, its scheduled 11 July trip to the Lake District has been canceled while repair work is underway.

It was thus described by a Belmond representative thus: “To ensure we meet our high standards of operation, we have made a change to the original itinerary. We feel by doing this, we can provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience to our guests.”

Postponement affected passengers who had already booked their seats on the luxury train. For passengers who had been waiting for the debut voyage of the Britannic Explorer, some had paid as much as £11,000 for a three-day journey as the train ran through the British countryside.
Belmond compensated for the inconvenience by giving affected passengers a full refund. Those passengers who had made a booking were given a refund of their fares and other related travel costs made on their trip. These passengers have also been rescheduled on their travels for later dates so that affected passengers can still experience luxurious travels promised by the Britannic Explorer.
