In a bid to boost tourism in the state, Maharashtra will promote heritage Jewish places as tourist places. A letter of intent has been signed in this regard between Maharashtra Tourism Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha and officials from the Israel consulate in Mumbai.
“Maharashtra will conserve Jewish monuments and other places in the state to boost tourism in the state. The Jews have been part of our society for centuries and many of them have adopted our culture and language as well,” news18 quoted the minister as saying after the event.
The occasion was graced by president of Sassoon Trust Solomon Sopher, the president of Shaare Rason Synagogue Judah Samuel, Consul General of Israel in Mumbai Kobbi Shoshani, Consul General of the US in Mumbai David J Ranz, and Consul General of France in Mumbai Jean-Marc Sere Charlet.
The Konkan belt of Maharashtra has had pockets of Jewish population for centuries. Also some prominent Jewish structures in Mumbai, Thane, Pune and other parts of the state have been identified for promotion as part of the plan.
