Malaysia,

Malaysia is stepping up its efforts to protect sea turtles with an innovative new initiative that combines adventure and conservation. The Turtle Discovery Experience offers tourists a unique opportunity to explore the world of sea turtles while actively contributing to their preservation. This initiative not only provides visitors with an unforgettable wildlife adventure but also raises awareness about the critical need to safeguard these endangered species for future generations. By blending eco-tourism with conservation, Malaysia aims to create a sustainable model that benefits both the environment and local communities.

This interactive program invites visitors to witness and participate in the release of baby green sea turtles back into their natural habitat.

Famed for its turquoise waters, untouched beaches, colorful coral ecosystems, and diverse marine species, Redang Island offers the ideal setting for nature-driven adventures and turtle conservation efforts.

At the heart of the experience is the Chagar Hutang Turtle Sanctuary, tucked away on a serene 350-meter crescent-shaped stretch of sand along the South China Sea. This secluded beach is one of Malaysia’s most important turtle nesting sites and is dedicated primarily to the endangered green sea turtle.

Guests are given a rare chance to dive into the world of marine conservation, learning about sea turtle biology and ocean biodiversity through meaningful activities.

The sanctuary is managed by the Sea Turtle Research Unit (SEATRU), which operates under the Institute of Oceanography and Environment (INOS) at Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT). Recognized as a fully protected area by the Terengganu state government since 2005, the sanctuary records up to 1,700 turtle nests each year. Nesting season peaks between May and July, with efforts focused on both Green and Hawksbill turtle populations. Conservation methods include meticulous nest monitoring, research, and hatchling protection.
