The Maldives hosted its first-ever DATA Forum 2024 on October 16, marking a significant milestone in advancing data and intelligence in the global travel and tourism industry. Organized by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) in partnership with E-Tourism Frontiers, the event gathered tourism data experts from around the world to discuss the future of destination management, consumer engagement, and operational efficiency.
Held at the stunning Bandos Maldives resort, the forum attracted industry leaders and experts, with opening remarks by Ibrahim Shiuree, CEO & MD of MMPRC, and Abdulla Giyas Riyaz, Chairperson of MMPRC. Riyaz’s presentation, titled “The Importance of Data in the Tourism Sector,” emphasized the growing necessity of data-driven decision-making to shape the future of global travel.

“The rapid evolution of the travel landscape means that data is no longer just a competitive advantage—it is essential for survival. This forum is about equipping professionals with the tools to enhance consumer engagement and improve destination management,” said Shiuree during his speech.
The DATA Forum 2024 featured keynote presentations from some of the world’s foremost tourism analytics firms, including E-Tourism Frontiers, Tourism Economics Oxford, Union Pay, Meltwater, ForwardKeys, Adara, Booking.com, Tripadvisor, Amadeus, and EmarketingEye. Their insights into global tourism trends, predictive analytics, and data applications were invaluable for industry professionals.

Morning sessions kicked off with a presentation by Sarah Mathews, CEO of E-Tourism Frontiers, titled “Data, Data Everywhere,” discussing the pivotal role of data in modern tourism. Michael Shoory from Tourism Economics Oxford provided an analysis of the global economic outlook, while Hu Binghan of Union Pay focused on the resurgence of Chinese outbound tourism and shifting spending trends worldwide.
Afternoon sessions took a deeper dive into practical data applications, with Olivier Ponti from ForwardKeys sharing strategies for predicting traveler behavior, and Bharat Nagpal of Adara explaining how to measure success through data. Calvin Koh from Tripadvisor discussed how user-generated content is influencing tourism decisions.
