23-year-old Maryland man fell into the crater of Vesuvius after he lost his phone inside the crater. The man has been rescued from the crater and has survived.

The Vesuvius, located in Italy is famous for destroying the Roman city of Pompeii, in the year 79 A.D. Philip Carroll, the identified man was visiting the infamous crater with two other families on Saturday. According to Paolo Cappelli, the president of the Presidio Permanente Vesuvio, the family and Mr Carroll began their journey from a base at the top of Vesuvius. It is the place from where they begin their journey from.
The family had hiked up to Vesuvius. They used a forbidden trail to get to the top, Cappelli told NBC News over the phone.

Cappelli said that this family took another trail, which is closed to tourists.
The family reached the top of the over 4,000-feet-high volcano. It was then that Carroll stopped to take a selfie and his phone fell into the crater.

Carroll bent down to get the phone, and right then he slipped inside the crater. After which he managed to stop his motion. He was successful but he could not come up either.

Cappelli said that he was very lucky to stop at the right time. If he kept going, he would have plunged 300 meters into the crater.

However, guides from Presidio Permanente Vesuvio saw the incident and came up to retrieve him. They had seen the incident from binoculars. They used a rope to get him up from the incident. The man has been arrested by the local Carabinieri police. The charges brought against him is not clear yet.
