Manipur’s cabinet approves state government’s plan to deal with all-around plastic pollution

Manipur’s cabinet has approved the state government’s plan to deal with the all-around plastic pollution by controlling the use of plastics. Manipur also approved the state tourism policy for this year.

Kh Tomba, a scientist associated with the Manipur Pollution Control Board said that the plastic policy is in tune with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s aim to get rid of single-use plastic by 2022.

The scientist said that after the completion of the new policy, the allowable thickness of single-use plastic carry bags would be increased slowly in accordance with the directives of the environment ministry. Currently, the allowed thickness for single-use carry bags is 50 microns.

Anyone who is found dealing in or using plastic items breaching the rules set in the policy would have to face imprisonment of up to five years, with a fine extendable up to Rs. 1 lakh.

This new policy is expected to be put into practice within a week. The scientist said that the new policy will considerably decrease the impact of plastic waste on the environment. Once the rule is fully implemented, an order would be issued to the dealers and shopkeepers to clear all their stocks.

The Manipur cabinet meeting also evaluated the progress of the government’s 100 Action Points for First 100 Days, which was announced by the state Chief Minister N Biren Singh in March.
