To make up the time that was lost in the last two years due to pandemic, now, more and more travellers are showing interest towards alternative, authentic and conscious-focused tourism experiences. Taking into account new features of sustainable travel aiming on destinations as well as their residents, now travellers are looking for experiences that are environmental-friendly and socially conscious.

This new trend, according to tourism experts was observed worldwide. It will take sustainable tourism to an altogether new height and recognize it as “meaningful tourism”.

Meaningful tourism is taking sustainable and responsible tourism to further advancement, considering the rising demands and change in domestic and international tourist behaviour.

Wolfgang Georg Arlt, the CEO of COTRI and the director of the Meaningful Tourism Center explains that the accomplishment of international tourism, with five times the number of trips made in 2019 in comparison to the year 1980, over and over again ridiculed the idea of hospitality and in many places became an overwhelming force over culture, authenticity, and serendipity, negatively affecting the levels of satisfaction of stakeholders.  Meaningful tourism brings the focus back on quality, which brings visitor satisfaction.

Arlt brilliantly said that meaningful tourism stays away from creating artificial mountains in Maldives. It doesn’t create artificial beaches in Mongolia. However, for an inhabitant of Tokyo, it does understand the charm of emptiness and clear Finnish night skies for sure.
