Meghalaya is adopting global best practices to manage the influx of tourists to its sites, as part of its ambition to become India’s top and most sustainable tourist destination. This initiative was announced by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma in his budget speech to the assembly. He highlighted the importance of sustainable tourism and the positive impact it would have on the state’s development.
During his speech, Sangma also discussed the financial benefits of this initiative. He pledged to distribute the revenue generated from tourism fairly among the communities involved. To support this effort, he has allocated Rs 50 crore for the 2024-25 financial year to enhance infrastructure in designated tourist zones, ensuring a better experience for visitors and locals alike.
The Chief Minister shared encouraging statistics, noting that the state has seen a significant increase in tourist numbers. The current financial year recorded 13.81 lakh visitors, surpassing the pre-pandemic figures by 1.1 lakh. This increase underscores the growing popularity of Meghalaya as a travel destination and highlights the potential for further growth in the tourism sector.
This approach reflects Meghalaya’s commitment to sustainable tourism, balancing visitor needs with environmental protection and community welfare. By adopting international standards for tourist management and investing in infrastructure, Meghalaya is poised to set a benchmark for sustainable tourism in India, benefiting both its economy and its communities.
