Mermec teams up with KiwiRail for New Zealand Railway safety initiative

Mermec Australia partners with KiwiRail to boost  New Zealand rail safety, supplying a high-tech diagnostic vehicle for 3,700km network enhancement.

Mermec Australia, a subsidiary of the Mermec Group known for its expertise in railway safety and maintenance technologies and a part of Angel Holding under the leadership of Vito Pertosa, has entered into a significant contract with New Zealand’s leading rail transport provider, KiwiRail. This collaboration focuses on enhancing the safety and quality of New Zealand’s railway system. The agreement entails the provision of a high-tech diagnostic vehicle by Mermec Australia, equipped with 12 cutting-edge Mermec systems. This vehicle is designed to inspect and measure approximately 3,700 kilometers of railway tracks, aiming to improve the network’s safety, reliability, and overall service quality. Utilizing advanced laser technology, an array of sensors, cameras, and measurement tools, the vehicle will perform comprehensive track analyses. These processes will be conducted efficiently, in real-time, and while maintaining high-speed operations, all with an emphasis on sustainable practices.

Luca Necchi Ghiri, CEO of the Mermec Group, remarked on this venture as a testament to the company’s leading role in the Oceania region and its expanding global footprint, including New Zealand. He highlighted this achievement, bolstered by the delivery of four similar diagnostic vehicles in Australia, as a reflection of the high-quality standards of Italian Mermec technology in the railway sector. He expressed gratitude to the team and Roberto Caporusso, Executive Director of Mermec Australia, for reaching this significant milestone, and looked forward to the collaboration with KiwiRail in enhancing the safety and efficiency of New Zealand’s rail network.

David Gordon, KiwiRail’s Chief of Capital Planning and Asset Development, emphasized that this partnership aligns with KiwiRail’s commitment to reducing risks and disruptions in the railway network. He noted that the introduction of Mermec’s advanced diagnostic train is a key step towards elevating the safety and operational efficiency of New Zealand’s national railway infrastructure.
