Mexico Sets Record with 8.3 Million International Visitors in October 2025, a Landmark Achievement for the Country’s Tourism

Mexico made history in October 2023 when it welcomed 8.3 million international tourists in a single month. This was a 10.7% increase over the 7.5 million tourists recorded in October 2022. This increase brought a boost in international tourism revenues of 2.44 billion dollars which was a 9.3% increase over the previous record of 2.24 billion dollars. This achievement is in line with the countryOf an international tourism economy of 24 billion dollars of the country.

The news was made public by the Mexican Secretary of Tourism, Miguel Torruco, during the commencement of nationwide festivities. Torruco expressed that a country with deep roots in civilization, like Mexico, being able to blend its rich history with modernity is an inspiration to the world. He also mentioned that it was gratifying to see Mexico in vogue and emphasized that it brought great pride to Mexicans to witness the world honoring their country’s rich history and civilization.

In a recent talk Mexico City Mayor Sheinbaum spoke about Mexico’s fascinating past which was created by its numerous outstanding civilizations long before the Spaniards arrived. She also complimented the people of Mexico for being hospitable and generously for being one of the most welcoming countries of the world.

Mexico’s first woman president also created history when she was elected under the “Fourth Transformation” initiative. From January to October 2025, the country welcomed 79.3 million international visitors, marking a 13.6% increase compared to the same period in 2024. This makes it the strongest January-to-October period in the nation’s history, showcasing that the tourism sector is thriving at a remarkable pace.

Domestic tourism has also been on the rise, with more Mexicans choosing to travel within their own country. With 3 million more domestic trips taken this year, and hotel occupancy reaching 92.6 million room nights, it’s clear that tourism is a vital part of the Mexican economy.

Mexico’s Global Appeal: Key Markets and Growth Areas

Mexico’s growing tourism numbers are attributed to the success of international marketing efforts by the Ministry of Tourism. Key markets showing significant growth include Italy, South Korea, Canada, Argentina, China, and the United States. The increase in visitors from these countries points to Mexico’s appeal as a diverse destination, whether travelers are seeking historical experiences, natural wonders, or vibrant city life.

Tourism Secretary Josefina Rodríguez Zamora called October 2025 the best month for tourism in the country’s history. She pointed out that cruise tourism had also seen an 8.9% increase, reflecting a 12% rise in its economic contribution. Additionally, international tourist arrivals—those who stay at least one night—grew by 5.8%, further solidifying Mexico’s status as a leading global destination.

The Growth of Mexico’s Maya Train and Cultural Tourism

A standout feature in Mexico’s tourism landscape is the rise of the Maya Train. This sustainable, cultural, and historical train route, which connects ancient Mayan sites with modern tourist hubs, saw a dramatic 181% increase in international passengers in 2025. More than 75,000 people from other countries have already experienced the train journey, which offers a unique way to explore Mexico’s cultural and natural wonders.

The country’s museums and archaeological sites have also played a significant role in attracting visitors. Museum attendance rose by 17.3%, and archaeological site visits saw a 2.1% increase, showcasing that Mexico’s rich cultural offerings continue to captivate travelers from around the world.

Rise in Air Travel and Airport Activity

As part of its broader tourism success, Mexico has seen an increase in both domestic and international air travel. In the first ten months of 2025, 157.2 million passengers traveled through Mexican airports, marking a 2.5% increase from 2024. The increase in air traffic has made it easier for visitors from around the world to access Mexico, further enhancing the country’s appeal as an international travel destination.

A Year of Milestones: Mexico at Global Tourism Events

Mexico’s participation in key international tourism events has also contributed to the country’s tourism surge. The Tianguis Nacional de Pueblos Mágicos, held in Pachuca, Hidalgo, generated over 67 million pesos in economic impact and attracted more than 62,000 attendees. This event not only highlighted the diverse attractions of Mexico’s many regions but also reinforced the country’s commitment to promoting its unique destinations to a global audience.

Looking ahead to 2026, Mexico will be the guest country at the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Madrid, where it will showcase its diverse tourism offerings with participation from all 32 states, alongside a delegation of over 800 tourism service providers and Indigenous representatives.
