Sydney Airport has entered a new phase in its passenger services strategy by appointing Travelex as its official foreign exchange and ATM services partner. The agreement is designed to significantly enhance the availability, accessibility, and convenience of travel money services across all terminals, aligning with evolving passenger expectations and the growing demand for more integrated financial solutions in major international airports.

The partnership marks an important development in the commercial and service landscape of Sydney Airport, one of Australia’s busiest aviation hubs. With international passenger flows continuing to recover and expand, airport authorities have been actively reassessing their retail and financial service offerings to ensure they remain relevant in a rapidly changing travel environment. The selection of Travelex follows a highly competitive tender process focused on modernising the airport’s foreign exchange infrastructure and improving the overall passenger experience.

Strategic shift towards modern travel money services

The decision reflects a broader transformation in how travellers manage money while on the move. Traditional reliance on cash-only exchange counters is gradually being replaced by hybrid models that combine physical service points with digital and self-service solutions. Passengers today increasingly expect flexibility, speed, and digital integration when accessing financial services before or during their journey.

This shift is driven by several global trends. Contactless payments have become the norm in many countries, while mobile banking and digital wallets have reduced dependence on physical cash in everyday life. However, international travel still requires access to local currencies, making foreign exchange services a critical part of airport infrastructure. As a result, airports are under pressure to deliver smarter, more efficient, and more customer-friendly solutions.

The partnership aims to respond directly to these behavioural changes by offering a multi-channel approach that combines in-person service, automated kiosks, and digital accessibility. This ensures passengers can plan and manage their travel money needs with greater ease and confidence.

Expanded service network across terminals

Under the new agreement, Travelex will commence operations at Sydney Airport from 1 July. The initial rollout will include a substantial retail and ATM footprint across the airport’s international and domestic terminals.

The plan includes 10 dedicated foreign exchange stores located within Terminal 1 (T1 International), which serves the majority of long-haul and international departures and arrivals. In addition to the physical retail presence, more than 20 ATMs will be installed across all terminals. These machines will dispense both Australian Dollars and a range of major foreign currencies, offering travellers immediate and flexible access to cash when needed.

This expanded network is designed to reduce friction points for passengers, particularly those arriving from overseas who may require local currency upon landing. It also supports outbound travellers who prefer to secure foreign cash before boarding their flights.

Enhancing passenger convenience and digital integration

A key feature of the partnership is its focus on improving the overall customer journey through innovation and digital integration. Travelex brings extensive global experience in travel money and financial services, with a strong emphasis on digital transformation, omni-channel operations, and customer-centric service delivery.

This means passengers will increasingly be able to interact with foreign exchange services in multiple ways. Whether through physical stores, automated machines, or pre-trip digital ordering platforms, the goal is to create a seamless and consistent experience across all touchpoints. This approach reduces waiting times, improves currency availability, and gives travellers greater control over how and when they access travel money.

Airport authorities have highlighted that this move is part of a broader strategy to modernise commercial services and improve non-aeronautical revenue streams, while also ensuring that passenger convenience remains a top priority.

Strengthening Sydney Airport’s global positioning

The introduction of a refreshed and expanded foreign exchange partnership is also expected to strengthen Sydney Airport’s competitiveness among leading international hubs. As global travel continues to grow, airports are increasingly being judged not only on operational efficiency but also on the quality of their passenger services and retail environments.

By partnering with an experienced global provider, Sydney Airport is positioning itself to meet the expectations of a new generation of travellers who prioritise speed, convenience, and digital accessibility. The integration of enhanced foreign exchange services is expected to play a key role in supporting smoother passenger flows and improving overall satisfaction levels.

As operations begin from July, both organisations will focus on ensuring a smooth transition and a consistent rollout across terminals, with the long-term goal of creating a more modern, efficient, and passenger-friendly financial services ecosystem within the airport environment.

Sydney Airport Group Executive Commercial Mark Zaouk said, “We’re pleased to welcome Travelex as our new foreign exchange partner, bringing a broader and more integrated approach that reflects the evolving needs of today’s traveller.

“Travelex’s expanded offering will provide passengers with greater choice, convenience and flexibility, helping to enhance the travel experience from departure through to arrival.

“I’d also like to thank Global Exchange for their partnership in delivering foreign exchange services at Sydney Airport.”

Travelex Managing Director, Australia and New Zealand, Asokan Sathurayar said: “We’re delighted to be returning to Sydney Airport after a ten-year absence, particularly during a milestone year for Travelex as we celebrate 50 years of helping travellers explore the world.

“Securing this contract is a strong endorsement of our customer proposition and reflects our continued commitment to providing convenient, secure and reliable travel money services.

“We look forward to welcoming passengers and delivering exceptional service and value they expect from Sydney Airport.”

Passengers at Sydney Airport can now obtain over 50 international currencies either by ordering online in advance or purchasing directly at the airport. In addition, they can buy or top up a Travelex Travel Money Card, which supports up to 10 different global currencies for easier overseas spending.

“We’ve made significant investments in our product offering, digital capabilities and customer service experience, and we’re excited to launch our enhanced services at Sydney Airport. As a result, travellers will benefit from a seamless and flexible travel money experience, with more choice and better value. We pride ourselves on continually enhancing the travel experience for passengers to access foreign currency, when and how they want,” Sathurayar added.

Travelex leverages deep international expertise in travel money and financial services, placing particular emphasis on digital transformation, seamless omni-channel operations, and enhanced customer-centric experiences.
