In 2023, Milan Bergamo Airport reached new heights in its operational success, setting a record as the most active year in its history. This marks a remarkable rebound and expansion compared to its pre-pandemic performance. The airport saw an extraordinary increase in passengers, surpassing 15 million in a single year, a first in its history, thereby cementing its role as a crucial hub for the region.

The airport witnessed a significant surge in passenger traffic, with a total of 15,974,386 people, indicating a 24.4% increase compared to the previous year, and surpassing the prior record set in 2019 by 15.3%. Flight operations also saw an upswing, totaling 101,696, which is 14.5% higher than the previous year and 6.6% more than in 2019. This growth underscores the airport’s appeal to a wide array of travelers, including both tourists and business professionals.

Throughout 2023, Milan Bergamo Airport broadened its network, adding new routes and boosting global connections. This strategic expansion catered to the rising demand for travel and enhanced the airport’s international presence. Consequently, the airport recorded over 100,000 aircraft movements in a year, a milestone achievement.

The airport welcomed new airlines, including Flydubai, Georgian Airways, Norwegian, and Cabo Verde Airlines, joining the diverse group of carriers operating from Milan Bergamo. Existing partners like Ryanair, Air Arabia, Volotea, Wizz Air, and Aeroitalia expanded their services, offering more frequent flights and introducing new destinations. Over 140 destinations in 42 countries were connected via 25 scheduled airlines in 2023.

In the upcoming year, Norwegian is set to further strengthen its operations at Milan Bergamo, launching four new routes. Starting January 16, the airline will begin twice-weekly flights to Tromso, followed by four weekly flights to Copenhagen starting March 31. On May 18, Norwegian will initiate twice-weekly flights to Stavanger, and from June 2, three weekly flights to Helsinki, in addition to seasonal operations to Oslo and Bergen introduced last year.

This collaboration with a range of airlines underlines the airport’s commitment to offering diverse travel options and expanding its destination portfolio to over 140 in 2023.

Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation at SACBO, expressed immense satisfaction with the record-breaking performance of Milan Bergamo Airport, attributing this success to the team’s hard work and effective collaboration with airline partners.
