Mizoram is making progress related to the development of a responsible tourism strategy. This was introduced in August 2020, said state sports minister Robert Romawia Royte.

In 2018, this policy was one of the political planks of Mizo National Front, the ruling party, imagines a sustainable development policy, synchronization, intensification of institutional framework, and skill
development, he said.

Also, the policy aims on building tourism as a developmental tool in terms of local communities and villages, eliminating poverty, and offering a living for the local population at the same time, maintaining the principles of social, economic, and environmental responsibilities, he said.

Also, the Mizoram Registration of Tourist Trade Act 2020 was enacted to launch an appropriate regulatory structure for tourism’s suitable development, he said. The Act within the state provides for the registration
of tourism service providers as well.

There are 63 homestays, 70 registered hotels, 10 tour operators, 657 registered restaurants, 40 travel agents, and tea stalls, and 22 catering units in the state at this moment, he said.

The state tourism department, as per the minister, during the 2022-23 fiscal, generated Rs 297.67 lakh revenue, almost 50 per cent more than what it got in the preceding fiscal.
