Mizoram, a hidden gem in India, is experiencing a remarkable surge in tourist arrivals this year, especially during the festive season. With locals and visitors flocking to Aizawl, the state capital, for vibrant Christmas celebrations, hotels and homestays are filled to capacity. The booming tourist activity highlights the growing allure of the region as a travel destination. Aizawl’s churches host diverse community celebrations, with both locals and travelers attending services and enjoying festive feasts. As the state’s popularity rises, Mizoram’s tourism infrastructure is under increasing demand, with various establishments striving to meet the influx of visitors.
Mizoram has seen a significant spike in tourism, particularly during the year-end festivities. The Christmas season brought a fresh wave of travelers, eager to experience the festive traditions of this northeastern state. The influx of tourists is not just a seasonal occurrence but reflects a growing trend of visitors heading to lesser-known Indian states for a more intimate cultural experience. According to the state tourism minister, the demand for accommodation exceeded expectations, leading to a packed list of hotels, homestays, and hostels.

As the holiday season gained momentum, tourism in Aizawl, Mizoram’s capital, saw a steady rise in footfall. Local homestays and hotels had to scramble to find available accommodations, with many owners reaching out to other establishments to house tourists. In addition to the festive celebrations, several churches, including the Presbyterian Church in the Dawrpui locality, witnessed an increased number of tourists attending services. The hospitality sector in Aizawl has become a key player in sustaining the local economy, which relies heavily on the influx of tourists during such peak times.
Due to the sudden surge in visitors, many accommodation providers found themselves fully booked. Homestay owners and hotel managers went the extra mile by contacting other establishments to ensure that tourists had somewhere to stay. Some hostels, where many regular guests had gone home for the holidays, were converted into temporary homestays. The makeshift homestay model turned out to be a successful solution to the accommodation crisis during this festive period.

Tourists visiting Aizawl were drawn to not only the Christmas celebrations but also to the opportunity to engage in community feasts, a tradition that locals and visitors alike cherish. In addition to attending church services, tourists explored the Reiek village peaks, Sakawrhmuituai, and Solomon’s Temple—all popular tourist spots in the vicinity. These sites, especially the historical and scenic spots in and around Aizawl, remain a key attraction for visitors looking to experience both the culture and natural beauty of Mizoram.
From April to October 2025, Mizoram welcomed a total of 4,48,028 tourists, with approximately 7,346 international visitors. However, the number of foreign tourists has been lower due to the re-imposition of the Protected Area Permit (PAP) since December 2024. While foreign arrivals remain constrained, domestic tourism continues to thrive, particularly with the arrival of train services to Sairang, which connects Aizawl with major cities like Guwahati, Kolkata, and Delhi.

Since the inauguration of the Sairang railway station in September 2025, travel to Mizoram has become more accessible, driving higher numbers of tourists to the state. The introduction of train services from major cities to Aizawl significantly enhanced the state’s connectivity, making it an attractive destination for both short-term and long-term visits.
Mizoram’s rise as a tourist destination isn’t merely due to the festive season but also the number of events organized by the tourism department throughout November and December. These events are designed to appeal to both local and international tourists, featuring cultural performances, art exhibitions, and local festivities that showcase the rich traditions of the state. The department has capitalized on the growing interest in winter tourism by aligning its promotional activities with major travel events.
Mizoram’s tourism sector is not only benefitting from the festive season but also from its increasingly accessible travel infrastructure. With the new railway station and the ongoing push to promote cultural tourism, the state is rapidly becoming a prime destination for travelers seeking an authentic and intimate experience of northeastern India. While domestic tourism continues to lead the way, efforts to draw international tourists are expected to gain momentum once the PAP restrictions are further eased.
As the state focuses on tourism promotion and sustainable growth, the Mizoram Tourism Department is actively working to enhance facilities, ensure the preservation of cultural heritage, and improve the experience of visitors from around the world.
