The recent snap shots of the surface of the moon taken by Chandrayaan-III displays several small and big impact craters, which the scientists have claimed to have happened due to bombardment of meteoroids. Also, the earth has 210 identified craters, which were created in the same way. Majority of these craters are in bad shape and need to be protected as geo-tourism sites to prevent exhaustion, they said.

Three established impact structures are in India, out of these 210 craters. The first one in the country is Lonar in Maharashtra, followed by Dhala in Bundelkhand and the main and the recent one is the Ramgarh crater based in Rajasthan.

The Centre for Promotion of Geoheritage and Geotourism which is the first nodal agency of India is set to encourage geoparks under Lucknow’s Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences. They are planning to work together with Rajasthan government to grow the Ramgarh crater as a protected site for geo-tourism so
that it can be safeguarded from exhaustion, said the director, BSIP, Prof Mahesh Thakkar.

Their main aim is to offer scientific insight for protecting the Ramgarh impact crater and make it as a geotourism and knowledge destination, said the Geological Survey of India and advisor, Satish Tripathi, Dy DG.
