The Moray Flying Club, based at Royal Air Force Lossiemouth, has marked a significant milestone in UK aviation history by integrating an electric aircraft into its fleet. This move positions the club as the first in the UK to offer initial pilot training that is entirely free from direct carbon emissions. On March 24, the club witnessed its first training flight conducted with the Pipistrel Velis Electro aircraft, affectionately known as ‘MORAY 01 ELECTRIC.’

In a strategic partnership with NEBOair, a specialist in electric aviation, the Moray Flying Club has leased this pioneering aircraft. This collaboration underscores the club’s commitment to mitigating environmental and auditory impacts associated with traditional flying practices. Drawing power from the electrical grid, similar to electric vehicles, this aircraft enables aspiring pilots to achieve their first solo flight without contributing to carbon emissions.

In addition to the introduction of the electric aircraft, the club has implemented several other environmentally conscious initiatives. A Virtual Reality simulator supplied by NEBOair has been instrumental in reducing the total flight hours necessary for obtaining a private pilot’s license, thereby further decreasing the club’s carbon footprint. Moreover, the replacement of two older aircraft with models powered by Rotax engines, which utilize lower-lead fuel and generate less noise, represents another step towards sustainable aviation.

These innovative measures are estimated to reduce the club’s emissions by approximately 30%, a figure that the club views as just the beginning of its environmental journey. Squadron Leader David Taudevin, the officer in charge of Moray Flying Club, highlighted the significance of this advancement not only for the club but also for the broader goal of achieving Net Zero emissions by 2040, in alignment with the Royal Air Force’s ambitions and ahead of the UK’s 2050 target.

This pioneering initiative by Moray Flying Club not only advances sustainable aviation practices but also has the potential to stimulate eco-friendly tourism in the region. By leading the charge towards a more sustainable future, the club sets a precedent for other recreational flying clubs, both military and civilian, encouraging a sector-wide shift towards Net Zero emissions. Established in 1990 as an RAF Sporting Association, Moray Flying Club opens its doors to military personnel, their families, and cadets, fostering a community of aviation enthusiasts committed to eco-conscious flying.
