Skiers at Mount Southington in the USA expressed their appreciation for the arrival of fresh snow on Thursday night, following what has been described as a “challenging” winter season. The resort’s 14 trails were anticipated to receive about an inch of fresh powder overnight into Friday, adding to the foot of snow that had fallen earlier in the week.

Steven Positano, the director of the snow sports school, conveyed his relief and enthusiasm about the snowfall, noting the resort’s ability to produce artificial snow. However, he emphasized that natural snowfall is always preferable, not just for cost reasons but also because it boosts enthusiasm among potential visitors. The sight of snow in their own backyards reminds them that it’s time for winter sports.

Positano reflected on the difficulties faced during the initial months of the winter, mentioning that in recent years, the resort had to rely heavily on artificial snow to keep its slopes open due to the lack of natural snowfall. The recent snowstorms, however, have allowed their snow machines to rest, with no artificial snow being made that week. He proudly stated that the resort was operating at full capacity thanks to the natural snow.

Visitors to the mountain also noted the significant impact of the fresh snow on their experience. Hailey Testa, a resident of South Windsor, compared her experiences, highlighting the superior quality of skiing on natural snow compared to the icy conditions created by artificial snow at another resort earlier in the season.

Another skier, Johnny, shared his personal observation on how the fresh, powdery snow improved the conditions for landing after jumps, contrasting it with the painful experiences of landing on icy patches when the snow was artificial.

This series of snowfalls at Mount Southington and the positive reactions from both the resort’s staff and visitors underscore the importance of natural snowfall for winter sports destinations. The arrival of fresh snow not only enhances the skiing experience, making it safer and more enjoyable for enthusiasts, but also serves as a crucial factor in attracting tourists.

As the winter sports community celebrates these snowfalls, the impact on tourism is palpable, with increased visitation not just for skiing but also for the overall winter resort experience. This natural bounty rejuvenates the resort and its surrounding area, promising a boost in local tourism and reinforcing the area’s appeal as a premier destination for winter sports enthusiasts.
