MSC-CRUISES

MSC Cruises embarked on an ambitious 121-day World Cruise aboard MSC Poesia from Genoa, Italy, on January 5, 2024. However, just days before departure, the cruise line found itself compelled to make significant adjustments to the original itinerary. This unexpected alteration excluded parts of the Mediterranean and the Middle East, specifically omitting stops in Malta, Greece, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

Guests Grapple with Altered Plans

Booking a world cruise is a decision made with careful consideration, especially regarding the anticipated ports of call. While passengers are generally aware of potential itinerary changes, the removal of a substantial segment of the cruise, particularly due to security concerns, was undoubtedly a shock for those aboard MSC Poesia.

Security Concerns forcing to make changes in itinerary

MSC Cruises made the crucial decision to avoid sailing through the Red Sea area due to heightened security risks posed by terrorist threats from Houthi rebels. The safety of passengers and crew became the top priority, leading to the necessity of route adjustments.

Revised Itinerary: From Mediterranean to Africa’s West Coast

Gianni Pilato, North West area manager of MSC Cruises, emphasized the company’s commitment to prioritizing safety. As a result, the new itinerary steers away from the Red Sea, opting for a westward route out of the Mediterranean, along Africa’s west coast, around the Cape of Good Hope, and then north along the African east coast.

New Destinations Introduced

The revised journey replaces the omitted ports with alternative destinations, including Alicante and Malaga in Spain, Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Dakar in Senegal, and Mindelo in Cape Verde. Despite the alterations, the majority of the original destinations are still part of the itinerary, albeit in a different sequence.

Africa and Beyond: A Unique Voyage

The adjusted route allows passengers to explore Africa’s western coastline before crossing the Atlantic to South America. The ship will navigate the Amazon River to reach Manaus, Brazil, cruise through the Caribbean, sail up the U.S. east coast, and finally journey to Greenland, concluding the World Cruise in Northern Europe.

Guest Experience Maintained

While ports on Africa’s eastern coastline, such as Mombasa, Kenya; Mauritius; Madagascar, and Durban, South Africa, are now positioned towards the latter part of the voyage, MSC Cruises ensures that the second half of the cruise offers a diverse and enriching experience.

Post-World Cruise Plans

The World Cruise’s conclusion will see disembarkation in Rostock-Warnemünde, Germany. Following the global voyage, MSC Poesia is set to be based in Warnemünde for the summer season of 2024.

Security-Driven Decision Justified

Despite initial surprise among guests, the decision to remove various European and Middle Eastern ports from the itinerary is entirely justified given the prevailing security climate. Recent drone attacks on vessels underscore the risks associated with cruising in the region. The cruise line’s swift action, reshuffling destinations while maintaining the essence of the world cruise experience, reflects a commitment to passenger safety and a proactive approach to unforeseen challenges.
