MSC Cruises has announced the cancellation of its planned trans-Atlantic crossing aboard the MSC Lirica, set to depart from Venice on November 7, 2025. The 21-night repositioning cruise, which was supposed to visit destinations in Sicily, Greece, Spain, and Brazil, will no longer sail. The cancellation, due to operational reasons, affects numerous passengers who had been looking forward to the journey. MSC has assured those impacted that they will receive alternative options to make up for the disruption.
In a statement sent to booked guests, MSC expressed sincere apologies, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the cancellation. “We know that you have dedicated time to planning your cruise, and we sincerely apologize for any disappointment this may cause,” the company said.
To mitigate the impact, MSC is offering three compensation options for those whose trips are affected:

MSC has also committed to reimbursing non-refundable air travel fees up to a maximum of $400 per person, in addition to offering a non-refundable 75 euros onboard credit for those who select a different cruise sailing.

In response to the cancellation, MSC confirmed that the MSC Sinfonia would take over the itineraries initially planned for the MSC Lirica in South America. Starting from Santos, Rio de Janeiro, and Itajaí, the 2002-built ship will offer three to eight-night cruises to popular Brazilian destinations, including Ilhabela and Búzios. The departure dates and itineraries will remain unchanged, providing guests with an alternative way to experience Brazil’s vibrant coast and historic towns.
The MSC Sinfonia will take over the routes previously planned for the MSC Lirica, but with no changes to departure dates or itinerary. The ship will maintain its high standards of comfort and service, ensuring that guests still enjoy a luxurious cruise experience. The ship will cruise through Brazil’s vibrant cities, visiting tropical islands and picturesque beaches, offering plenty of opportunities for relaxation and adventure.
MSC Cruises emphasized that guest satisfaction is a top priority, and the team is working diligently to provide seamless alternatives to those affected by the cancellation. “Your satisfaction is our priority, and we are here to help you find the perfect alternative,” the company reiterated, making sure passengers know that they’ll be supported throughout this change.
Despite the unforeseen disruption, MSC has worked quickly to ensure that customers are taken care of, with quick rebooking options and additional assistance to help them find a new travel experience.
The cancellation comes at a time when the cruise industry is still grappling with ongoing ship delivery delays, affecting many major cruise lines. While MSC Cruises has been transparent with its guests, the shift in cruise itineraries highlights the ongoing challenges faced by the industry as it adapts to disruptions in ship availability and travel demand.
For those whose travel plans were disrupted by the MSC Lirica’s cancellation, there are plenty of alternative options to explore. Whether you choose to take a different trans-Atlantic crossing or explore Brazil’s coast aboard the MSC Sinfonia, the MSC team has ensured that guests will be well taken care of. With plenty of options to choose from, passengers can still look forward to a memorable, luxurious journey—even if it’s not quite what they originally planned.
