The Mekong Tourism Forum 2026 is scheduled to take place in Yangon, Myanmar, from 16–18 June 2026, bringing together a wide spectrum of tourism stakeholders from across the Greater Mekong Subregion. The three-day event will be hosted at the Pan Pacific Hotel Yangon and is expected to serve as a key platform for shaping collaborative tourism strategies across the region.

The forum is being jointly organised by Myanmar’s Ministry of Hotels, Tourism and Culture and the Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office (MTCO). This year’s edition will be held under the guiding theme “Tourism for People, Travel with Purpose,” reflecting a growing regional commitment to ensuring that tourism development delivers meaningful benefits to communities while supporting cultural and environmental sustainability.

The Greater Mekong Subregion, which includes Cambodia, China, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam, continues to strengthen tourism as a shared economic and cultural connector. The Mekong Tourism Forum functions as an important annual meeting point for these countries to align strategies, share insights, and explore joint solutions to common challenges facing the sector.

The 2026 forum is expected to place strong emphasis on inclusive tourism models that prioritise local participation. Community-based tourism will be a central topic, with discussions focusing on how local communities can take a more active role in tourism planning and benefit more directly from tourism-related income. The forum will also examine how such models can preserve cultural identity while creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.

Destination resilience will be another major area of discussion. As tourism destinations across the world continue to navigate shifting economic conditions, environmental risks, and changing traveller behaviour, the forum will explore how Greater Mekong destinations can build stronger systems to adapt and recover. Topics will include diversification of tourism offerings, improved coordination between stakeholders, and long-term destination planning.

Workforce development is also expected to feature prominently. The tourism and hospitality sectors across the region face ongoing demands for skilled labour, digital readiness, and service innovation. Sessions will explore strategies for improving training systems, strengthening industry-education linkages, and preparing the workforce for evolving expectations in global travel markets.

Cultural heritage protection remains a core pillar of the forum’s agenda. The Mekong region is widely recognised for its diverse cultural landscapes, traditions, and living heritage. Discussions will focus on how tourism can support the safeguarding of these cultural assets while ensuring that communities retain ownership and control over how their heritage is presented and experienced.

The programme will include keynote presentations, panel discussions, technical sessions, and networking opportunities designed to encourage knowledge exchange among policymakers, tourism operators, researchers, and development organisations. Key subject areas will include destination governance, marketing strategies, sustainability practices, and innovation in tourism services.

Ahead of the main forum, a dedicated pre-event workshop will focus on evidence-based destination marketing and tourism intelligence. This session will highlight how data and analytics can be used more effectively to guide tourism planning, improve competitiveness, and support cross-border coordination within the region.

Beyond formal discussions, the forum will also offer immersive cultural and field experiences across Yangon. Delegates will explore the city’s architectural landmarks, spiritual heritage sites, and traditional craft communities, gaining insight into how tourism intersects with local culture and urban identity.

A regional gastronomy programme will further highlight culinary diversity across the Greater Mekong Subregion. The showcase will underline the role of food in shaping cultural expression and visitor experiences, while also drawing attention to the importance of local food systems in supporting sustainable tourism economies.

Regional cooperation will remain at the heart of the forum’s purpose. By bringing together participants from multiple countries, the event aims to strengthen collaboration on tourism policy, marketing initiatives, infrastructure development, and sustainability frameworks. The forum continues to promote the idea of the Greater Mekong Subregion as an interconnected tourism landscape rather than separate national destinations.

The Mekong Tourism Coordinating Office, established in 2006, plays a central role in enabling this cooperation. It works with member countries to support tourism initiatives that advance inclusive growth, environmental responsibility, and long-term regional integration. Over time, it has helped build stronger institutional linkages and foster shared approaches to tourism development across the subregion.

As the tourism industry continues to evolve in response to global shifts, the Mekong Tourism Forum 2026 is expected to offer a valuable space for reflection, collaboration, and forward planning. With its focus on people-centred and purpose-driven tourism, the forum aims to support a more balanced and resilient future for the region’s travel and hospitality sector.
