Naga Fireballs, Sapporo,

Thai team wins 2nd at 48th Snow Sculpting Contest with “Naga Fireballs,” showcasing Thailand’s rich culture at Sapporo Festival.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, the head of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), extended her warmest congratulations to the Thai team for securing the second place in the “Naga Fireballs” category at the 48th edition of the Global Snow Sculpting Championship, which wrapped up today. The sculpture, depicting the mystical Naga Fire event, represents a slice of Thailand’s rich cultural heritage and artistic prowess, underscoring TAT’s efforts to promote the country’s cultural soft power and enriching travel experiences.

After a three-year break due to global health concerns, the Global Snow Sculpting Championship, a highlight of the 74th Sapporo Snow Festival, made a comeback this year. The event featured nine teams from across the globe, including the USA (Hawaii and Portland), Indonesia, Poland, Singapore, Lithuania, Mongolia, South Korea, and Thailand.

For this year’s contest, TAT selected seasoned sculptors Kusol Bunkobsongserm, Amnoaysak Srisuk, and Kritsana Wongtes, who have previously competed in this prestigious event. Their entry, “The Naga Fireballs,” is a monumental snow sculpture measuring 3 meters in all dimensions, inspired by the legendary Naga Fire phenomenon. This phenomenon, deeply rooted in religious tradition, involves the mysterious ascent of numerous fireballs from the Mekong River, believed to be offerings from the mythical Naga serpent to Buddha.

Thailand’s involvement in the championship dates back to 1991, marking this year as their 24th participation. Over the years, Thai teams have clinched the title nine times, with victories spanning consecutive years in 2008-2010 and 2018-2020, and additional wins in 2000, 2013, and 2015.

The 74th Sapporo Snow Festival continues through February 11, 2024, across three locations: Odori (the primary venue), Susukino, and Tsudome.
