Air India will conduct a test flight at Navi Mumbai International Airport in April 2025, assessing its readiness before the grand opening on April 17
Air India, under Tata Group ownership, is gearing up for a critical test flight at Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) in April 2025. This trial run will evaluate the airport’s preparedness for handling widebody international aircraft, ensuring seamless operations before its official opening on April 17, 2025.
The multi-nodal aviation hub, a first of its kind in India, is set to transform the country’s air travel infrastructure. The airport’s development aims to decongest Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) and create additional capacity for domestic and international carriers.
IndiGo became the first airline to execute a validation flight at NMIA in December 2024, deploying an Airbus A320. Following its lead, low-cost carriers like IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Akasa Air are expected to be among the first to transition operations to the new facility. Their move aligns with a larger aviation expansion strategy, ensuring efficient flight connectivity and reducing operational pressure on Mumbai’s existing airport.

While Air India remains committed to full-service international operations from Mumbai’s existing airport, the airline will gradually shift portions of its domestic network to NMIA. This move will help optimize passenger distribution between the two airports, enhancing travel efficiency for millions of flyers.
Strategically located 22 miles southeast of Mumbai, NMIA is a $2.1 billion investment designed to meet the surging demand for air travel. Beyond air connectivity, the project features a state-of-the-art “aero city”, expected to boost non-aviation revenue and improve passenger experiences with integrated commercial, retail, and hospitality zones.

The Adani Group, which manages both Mumbai’s existing airport and the new Navi Mumbai hub, plays a pivotal role in orchestrating airline relocations. With Air India’s upcoming test flight, NMIA inches closer to solidifying its position as a global transit hub, aspiring to match the prominence of aviation giants like Dubai, London, and Singapore.
As the countdown to April 2025 progresses, NMIA’s debut marks a major leap forward for India’s aviation sector, promising seamless connectivity, world-class infrastructure, and an enhanced travel experience for passengers worldwide.
