In a momentous step forward for India’s aviation industry, the much-awaited Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) commenced its commercial operations today, cementing Mumbai’s position among the world’s leading global aviation hubs. Built in record time by the Adani Group, NMIA is not just another airport; it’s a groundbreaking infrastructure achievement that will change the face of air travel in Mumbai, India, and beyond.
The inauguration of NMIA marks a pivotal moment in India’s infrastructure development. As the airport opens its doors to the world, it represents the Adani Group’s remarkable ability to deliver world-class, nation-building projects at an unprecedented pace. This greenfield airport project is one of the largest in India and stands as a testament to India’s rapidly advancing ambitions in the global infrastructure space.

Mumbai’s aviation ecosystem is now set to see a major transformation with NMIA’s arrival. The airport is designed to alleviate congestion at the already crowded Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), opening the doors to greater capacity, convenience, and enhanced passenger experience. As the second airport in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), NMIA is set to serve as a vital gateway for the country’s future economic growth and resilience.
On December 25, 2025, the inaugural commercial flight—IndiGo flight 6E460 from Bengaluru—landed at NMIA to a traditional water cannon salute. Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani was on hand to personally welcome passengers from the first flight, reflecting his deep commitment to this historic moment for Mumbai and India. He took the opportunity to interact with passengers, airport staff, frontline workers, and first-time flyers, underscoring the airport’s focus on a seamless and high-quality passenger experience from the outset.
NMIA kicked off its operations with impressive statistics: 48 flights were handled on its first day, connecting nine domestic destinations and serving over 4,000 passengers. The peak traffic recorded between 05:00 and 07:00 hours indicated strong early demand, validating NMIA’s readiness to meet the region’s growing aviation needs.
Mumbai’s evolution into a global aviation hub is now firmly underway, with NMIA joining an elite league of cities like New York, London, Tokyo, and Shanghai. These cities boast multiple airports to manage rising air traffic demand effectively. NMIA plays a crucial role in this vision, introducing the concept of a multi-airport system in Mumbai, which will significantly boost the region’s aviation capacity.

The airport’s development not only helps alleviate congestion at CSMIA but also ensures that Mumbai remains at the forefront of global aviation growth. With NMIA’s operations, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region will now have an airport system designed for resilience, scalability, and future expansion. This development promises to enhance the overall passenger experience, offering more choices and improved accessibility for travellers from around the world.
The opening ceremony was marked by a celebration of India’s rich cultural heritage, with local performances such as Lezim (folk dance), Dhol (percussion drums), and Tutari (ceremonial wind instrument) filling the air with energy and vibrancy. These performances offered visitors a deep dive into Maharashtra’s cultural roots, giving a sense of the local identity at the heart of NMIA’s operations.
During the launch, Mr. Adani, along with Param Vir Chakra awardees Captain Bana Singh and Subedar Major Sanjay Kumar, led a ceremonial walk through the terminal. The flag-hoisting ceremony was followed by the national anthem, symbolizing the deep patriotism that guided the creation of NMIA. Prominent figures, including sportspersons like Suryakumar Yadav, Mithali Raj, and Sunil Chhetri, also participated, lending their support to the monumental occasion.
Adani Group’s vision for NMIA is to position it as a hub for global air travel while also driving socio-economic growth in the region. Jeet Adani, Director of Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), highlighted that the opening of NMIA strengthens Mumbai’s role as a key aviation hub for the future. The airport is designed to accommodate growing passenger numbers and the evolving needs of India’s booming economy, making it a key asset for the nation’s long-term infrastructure development.
In a demonstration of the future of sustainable aviation, a breathtaking drone display featuring 1,515 synchronised drones illuminated the sky the evening before NMIA’s operations began. The spectacle, themed ‘Rise of India,’ depicted the 3D lotus design of the airport, its commitment to sustainability, and a soaring aircraft—a powerful symbol of India’s aviation aspirations.
NMIA’s opening is not just a win for Mumbai but for India as a whole. The new airport marks a crucial step in the development of a resilient and futureproof aviation system for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Its capacity to handle both domestic and international flights will ensure that India’s economic growth continues to rise, with Mumbai positioned at the heart of it all.
With its state-of-the-art facilities, robust infrastructure, and cutting-edge design, NMIA offers a seamless travel experience for passengers and airline partners alike. The launch also highlights India’s growing focus on delivering world-class infrastructure that supports both economic development and environmental sustainability. NMIA’s green design sets a benchmark for future airport projects across the country.
The opening of Navi Mumbai International Airport is more than just the completion of an infrastructure project—it’s a symbol of India’s ambitions, hard work, and forward-thinking. With NMIA now operational, Mumbai has joined the ranks of the world’s most significant aviation cities. As the airport continues to evolve, it will play an instrumental role in transforming Mumbai into a true global gateway, driving economic growth, creating new jobs, and connecting India to the world.
Gautam Adani’s leadership and the successful launch of NMIA underscore a proud moment for Mumbai, the Adani Group, and India as a whole. This new gateway not only reflects India’s growing stature on the global stage but also promises a brighter future for the nation’s aviation sector.
