Newcomers to cruising are being cautioned against bringing DIY meals and personal streaming gadgets, as they might pose risks while at sea.

StressFreeCarRental.com’s travel specialists have identified seven lesser-known hazards that novices might unwittingly introduce to a cruise ship.

With an anticipated 30 million passengers having set sail in 2023, the cruising industry is experiencing a surge and continues to be a rapidly expanding area within the travel sector.

There’s been a notable 70% uptick in individuals seeking to embark on their first cruise, highlighting the critical nature of mindful luggage preparation.

New cruisers are advised to be vigilant in avoiding the inclusion of banned items in their luggage.

Items such as portable irons, recreational vehicles, extension leads, and certain sporting equipment are forbidden due to their potential danger at sea.

John Charnock, the CEO of StressFreeCarRental.com, commented on the rise in cruising novices exploring the seas this summer, stressing the importance of being informed about prohibited items.

He noted that while the regulations may vary across cruise lines, the aim is to provide guidance on commonly banned items due to their hazard potential.

He highlighted that fires or foodborne illnesses on a cruise ship could have catastrophic consequences, urging first-time cruisers to thoroughly research and exclude any items that could compromise safety or are explicitly forbidden.

Among the items flagged for exclusion due to safety concerns are streaming devices and homemade meals, which are not permitted on board.

StressFreeCarRental.com lists six unexpected items that could be risky at sea:

  1. Irons and Steamers:
These heat-generating appliances are banned on most ships due to their fire risk, especially in confined spaces. Cruise ships typically offer communal laundry facilities to prevent such hazards.
  2. Extension Cords/Leads:
For reasons other than medical necessities, items like extension cords and surge protectors are generally banned to adhere to fire and safety standards.
  3. Streaming Gadgets:
Certain cruise lines ban devices like the Amazon Fire Stick, Apple TV, and Google Chromecast due to fire safety concerns for passengers, with potential confiscation at security screenings.
  4. Toy Vehicles:
Bringing remote-controlled toys, such as cars, planes, or themed drones, is discouraged due to their electrical nature and potential to cause harm or fire risks.
  5. DIY Meals:
Surprisingly, homemade food is generally prohibited on cruises to prevent food safety issues and contamination risks, with pre-packaged, sealed food being the exception.
  6. Athletic Equipment:
Cruise lines often restrict sports equipment like bats, hockey sticks, and skateboards, considering them hazardous due to the risk of injury or their potential use as weapons.
