Nearly 300,000 Indonesian Tourists Flock To Japan In The First Half Of 2024

Indonesia emerges as a top contributor to Japan’s tourism, with nearly 300,000 visitors in the first half of 2024, marking a 27.5% increase from 2023.

Indonesia has emerged as one of the top contributors to Japan’s tourism sector. Data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) reveals that between January and July 2024, a remarkable 293,400 Indonesian tourists visited Japan. This significant influx has elevated Indonesia to the 12th position among the countries sending the most tourists to Japan in 2024.

Indonesian tourist arrivals in Japan have seen a notable increase of approximately 27.5% compared to the same period in 2023. For the entirety of 2023, a total of 400,000 Indonesian visitors were recorded.

Indonesian Tourists’ Spending in Japan Reaches New Heights

Yoshiko Iwamoto, Senior Director of the JNTO Jakarta Office, highlighted that Indonesian tourists spent a staggering 85.2 billion yen, or roughly Rp9 trillion, during their visits to Japan in 2023. This amount marks a substantial 58% rise compared to pre-pandemic spending levels, which were around 53.9 billion yen, or approximately Rp5.7 trillion, in 2019.

Tokyo: A Prime Destination for Indonesian Travelers

The Tokyo area remains a favorite among Indonesian tourists, particularly during the cherry blossom season in April. In addition to enjoying the cherry blossoms, Indonesian tourists are also drawn to Japan’s culinary experiences and natural beauty. They show a keen interest in Japan’s renowned cuisine, including sushi, ramen, tempura, and takoyaki, as well as its iconic natural attractions like Mount Fuji, unique waterfalls, and scenic islands.
