Groningen in the Netherlands is Europe’s hidden gem for expats, offering a high quality of life, affordable living, and a vibrant international community.
Often referred to as the “Metropolis of the North,” Groningen may be smaller than other major Dutch cities, but it is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and exceptional livability. The city seamlessly blends rich culture, a dynamic social scene, and a welcoming environment, making it an appealing choice for those looking to relocate.

A 2023 European Commission report ranked Groningen as the third-best city in Europe for quality of life. It scored highly across various well-being indicators, particularly for its inclusive and progressive community. More than 90% of residents felt the city was a safe and welcoming place for LGBTQIA individuals, and over 85% reported feeling secure when walking alone at night, thanks to Groningen’s low crime rates.
Navigating the city is easy due to its compact layout. Walking is a popular mode of transport, and only 30% of residents reported using a car daily, according to the same European Commission report. The pedestrian-friendly city centre is lined with cafés, shops, and historic landmarks, while outdoor enthusiasts can explore De Onlanden, a scenic nature reserve ideal for biking, walking, and running. Popular city trails include the well-rated Pieterpad route between Groningen and Zuidlaren and a leisurely urban walk showcasing historic guesthouses, green spaces, and architectural highlights.
Despite its modest size, Groningen has a notable impact on tourism and expat life in the Netherlands. The city has attracted an increasing number of British expats, in part due to the University of Groningen, which enrolls many British students. Its relatively affordable cost of living, combined with a strong international community, makes it an attractive place to settle.
One British expat who moved from London highlighted that Groningen’s living costs are “on the lower end of Dutch cities,” though expenses such as healthcare, taxes, and insurance can increase overall expenditures.

Housing prices in Groningen have been trending upward. According to Walter Living, a property data platform, the average listing price in February 2025 rose to €363,379 (£302,571) from €360,930 (£300,531) in the previous quarter. Despite this increase, Groningen remains more affordable than the Dutch national average, as Statista reported that the price of a single-family home in the Netherlands reached approximately €434,000 (£361,370) in Q3 2024.
For expats searching for a balance between affordability, quality of life, and a supportive community, Groningen stands out as a prime destination in the Netherlands.
