Network Rail Consulting Inc, the US subsidiary of Network Rail Consulting, has secured a $73.2 million (£57.5 million) contract to provide systems engineering services for California’s High-Speed Rail Program.

California’s high-speed network, the first of its kind in the USA, will feature trains traveling at speeds of up to 200 mph, connecting the Los Angeles basin to San Francisco, with subsequent extensions to Sacramento and San Diego. With construction already underway, Network Rail Consulting Inc will play a pivotal role in supporting the California High-Speed Rail Authority’s Rail and Operations Delivery Branch as a partner until May 2029.

Nigel Ash, the Chief Executive of Network Rail Consulting Inc and Global Managing Director of Network Rail Consulting, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “Having been engaged in the development of the California High-Speed Rail Program since 2015, we are thrilled to extend our assistance to the California High-Speed Rail Authority in delivering this significant investment, set to be one of the most transformative infrastructure projects in US history.”

The services provided by Network Rail Consulting will encompass asset management, rail engineering support and oversight, design and construction operations, maintenance oversight, network integration, program compliance, startup and commissioning, Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) certification, system safety and security, as well as commercial support for track, systems, and trainsets contracts.

Network Rail Consulting will establish partnerships with global consultants like Egis and Ricardo, while also collaborating with six local California firms: C2PM, D.R McNatty & Associates, Inc., GCM Consulting, Inc., Intueor Consulting, Inc., LOR Consulting Group LLC, and NSI Engineering, Inc. The California High-Speed Rail Authority is tasked with overseeing the comprehensive management of the high-speed network, which includes planning, design, construction, and operation. This network is projected to span 800 miles and feature up to 24 stations. Moreover, the Authority is forging alliances with regional entities to implement a statewide rail modernization initiative. This initiative will involve significant investments in local and regional rail infrastructure to meet the evolving transportation needs of the 21st century in the state.
