AAA projects that a record 81.8 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home during the Thanksgiving holiday period, which runs from Tuesday, November 25 to Monday, December 1. The bulk of Thanksgiving travelers, nearly 90 percent, are expected to hit the road, with 73 million people planning to travel by car. That’s an additional 1.3 million drivers compared to last Thanksgiving. As flight cancellations have become a concern this year, the number of road travelers could be even higher if some people opt to drive instead of fly.
For those renting cars, AAA’s car rental partner Hertz anticipates that Wednesday will be the busiest day for car rentals. The top markets with the highest demand are Orlando, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and Newark. Interestingly, domestic car rentals are projected to be 15% cheaper this Thanksgiving compared to last year, making it a more affordable option for many.
