In historic New Bern, the 4th Annual North Carolina Plein Air Art Festival will be starting on Sunday, May 12th, and will continue through Sunday i.e., May 19th. This eight-day Festival displays 35 nationwide and internationally commended plein air artists, with 20 recently juried painters, connecting with 15 award winners and best performers from last year’s festival.
The term ‘plein air’ is French and means ‘open air’, said Festival organizer, Kippy Hammond. Plein air painting can be copied back to Impressionist artists like Renoir, Monet, and Degas, painting outdoors and seizing brief moments of light, atmosphere, color, and the attitude of a particular scene, in comparison to comprehensive representations.
Painting venues comprise historic New Bern, the first capital of North Carolina and the state’s second-oldest European- American town; Beaufort is the home of the North Carolina Maritime Museum and Oriental is North Carolina’s sailing capital. Besides, artists will select added sites and scenes in Carteret, Craven, and Pamlico Counties.
As per Hammond, artists will make around 400 paintings containing local subjects, scenes, and panoramas, in a welcoming competition to grab the Best of Show Koffenberger Award, and other well-known awards and recognitions as well. The attendees of the festival will have many opportunities to talk with the artists every day.
