An investment of £100 million is being allocated for the construction of a new electric train depot in Shipley, promising to create 100 jobs within the town. This initiative, positioned on the erstwhile Crossley Evans site adjacent to Shipley Railway Station, forms a part of the extensive Transpennine route upgrade, earmarked as a significant advancement in the region’s transportation infrastructure.
The announcement was made by the Government’s Rail Minister, Huw Merriman, who highlighted the future role of the Shipley TrainCare Centre in the maintenance, repair, and storage of electric trains, a move set to transition the operational dynamics from the Neville Hill depot in East Leeds, albeit temporarily due to the Transpennine route work.
Despite the temporary closure of Neville Hill, it’s been noted that the electric train depot’s operations will persist in Shipley, featuring state-of-the-art technology and offering high-skilled job opportunities. The completion of this development is anticipated by 2027, marking a significant milestone in the town’s employment landscape and positioning it as one of the central employers within the town centre.
During his visit, Merriman, alongside representatives from Northern Rail and Bradford Council’s Leader Susan Hinchcliffe, reviewed the designs for the new depot, underscoring the revitalization of the area’s historical rail connection, dating back to its origins as a goods yard in 1846. This transformation is seen as a reconnection to its railway heritage, with the future depot set to handle modern, clean electric trains, aligning with contemporary environmental and technological standards.
This development not only symbolizes a significant investment in Shipley’s infrastructure but also exemplifies the broader impact on global travel by enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of rail transport in the region. It underscores the pivotal role of innovative technologies and skilled employment in fostering economic growth and supporting the rail network’s evolution, reflecting a sustainable transition towards electric rail services. This investment is indicative of a growing trend towards enhancing rail networks worldwide, contributing to the global objective of sustainable and efficient travel solutions.
